' Christchurch.— The Lyttelton Times of the 4th instant reports :— A moderate trade is being done in old wheat for- export ; sales in this staple are noted at 4s Id to 4s 3d for prime samples, bat these figures were only given to complete shipments. New wheat is offering somewhat freely, and sales are reported at 3s 8d to 3s 9d per bushel ; but as the season advances, we scarcely expect these rates will be maintained, as, in the absence of available tonnage to England, there is no other outlet at present, so that values will probably decline to 3s 6d, or a shade over. The demand for oats continues active, and growers of good samples of heavy feed have no difficulty in effecting sales for new at 2s 2d to 2s 2^d per bushel. Holders of barley, rather than accept the prices offering, have been shipping large quantities to 3aelbourne, and to judge by recent account sales, the result has proved satisfactory. By advices to hand ex Tararua from Melbourne, we note that Adelaide wheat is selling very freely at 6s 4£d to 6s 5d ; if these quotations are maintained, very little new wheat will be sold in this market under 3s 9d to 3s 10^d. The oat market is likewise very firm. Good milling samples coutimie in demand at 3s lid to 4s ; at these figures quotations here ought to advauce, and we have little doubt that during the next few days a decided improvement will result. Provisions have not been attracting much notice for export, and the present aspect of the market is not cheerful. Butter finds buyers at 6d to 6£d. Cheese is somewhat neglected at (new) 4fd to sd. Hams and bacon range from 7fd to 9d for assbrted lines, fit for export.
