The Princess Louise, with the express consent of Her Majesty the Queen, has accepted the dedication of Mr Robert Buchanan's work on the Highlands, and the book will appear immediately, under the title of " Hebrides and the Land of Lorn." The election of the Mayor of Cork was held on December 1, and Mr Alderman . John Daly was unanimously elected Mayor. He is a Liberal. The Conservatives abstained from voting. In his opening address the new Mayor • carefully 1 avoided politics. The managers of the Royal Edinburgh Infirmary have decided, by a majority of ten votes to six, to refuse admittance to the wards to female stndents. The female medical students of the Edinburgh University have issued a protest against their exclusion. A terrible murder has been committed in Westmeath. The steward of Mr Percy, a large millowner, has been shot at his own floor, and within a few paces of the police-station. , He dropped dead into his wife's arms on his threshold. Mr Streeter, the well-known jeweller, in conjunction with one or two other gentlemen, has organised &v expedition to the Diamond Fields of South Africa, and secured the services of Mr T. W. Tobin, Secretary of the Royal Polytechnic Institution. On Mr Tobin's return the public is promised a full and accurate account of that interesting locality, and its valuable . products, in an illustrated lecture at the Polytechnic.
