COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tuesday, February 7. Petitions were read and received from tbe inhabitants Stafford praying for a road to the Arahura; from the the Totara Boad Board for assistance in repairing storm and sludge channels ; and from Mr Hawkins applying for a block of land under the 56th section of the Waste Lands Act. On the motion of Mr Barfp a committee was appointed to consider the construction of a road from Stafford to Arahura. The following resolution respecting Dr Knight's report was carried : — " That this Council learns with great satisfaction that it is the desire of the General Government to ascertain the opinion of the County Chairman on Dr Knight's report, and can but affirm that the making of the main trunk Hues of mads, connecting Ross with Greyraouth, is most urgently required. At the same time it is very desirable that the General Government should be informed that besides the main trunk line of road, the road from Hokitika to Kokotahi," and from Greymouth to the Coal Mines, are of vital importance to the districts, and that the southern portion of the County equally demands the making of roads and tracks to develope the great resources of the district." With reference to the Christchurch road. Mr Button moved, and Mr Bonar seconded a motion, that the maintenance of the Christchurch road should be retained in the Council's own hands. At MrBoKAR's suggestion, the following words were added to the motion : — " In consideration of the amount so expended being applied to the formation of new roads throughout the County," and in that form the motion was carried. The consideration of the Estimates was postponed until the following day. Mr Guinness moved and carried a resolution for the appointment of a Committee to consider the expenses of the General Government Departments in the County. The Chairman mentioned that the amount paid in General Government salaries in the last four months was L 5400, and that on an average the expenditure was about L 16,000 a-year.
