Auckland via Thames, Feb. 8. The. Caledonia claim is still rich. The selling price of shares is LlB. Commissioner Branigan is suffering from the effects of sunstroke, which occurred during his journey to Taupo from Napier. He goes to Wellington in the Luna to-morrow, temporarily invalided. Mr Busby has to wait for the L 13,000 balance of his compensation till the loan is negotiated. This further confirms the rumor of the stoppage of Government advances by the Bank, but which was never doubted or contradicted here. Arrived, Airedale. The poll for City West was as follows :— Gillies, SJO; Williamson, 508 ; Dignan, 200. Taranaki, via Patea, Feb. 6. The poles for the telegraph were landed
this day from the .Kangitira. They will be erected forthwith. Judge Arney came through from Wellington in Cobb's coach. He speaks highly of the country between Patea and New Plymouth, and says that the journey is not so bad as anticipated. Mr Parris has returned; the natives are all quietly inclined down south. Te Whiti is to hold a meeting in March, when permission it is thought will be granted to erect the telegraph on his land. Wellington, Feb. 8. The election for Wellington City has resulted in the return of Messrs Pearce and Hunter. The votes were as follows : — Pearce, 379 ; Hunter, 366 ; Travers, 345 ; Richmond, 339 ; Borlase, 78 ; Martin, 33. Both the successful candidates are new members and support Ministers. There was a great display of enthusiasm. Messrs Pearce and Hunter were driven through the streets in a coach drawn by six] horses.
