The ss. Murray, Captain Palmer, returned from Hokitika yesterday, and left again at midnight for Westport and Nelson. We are glad to hear the Zephyr was got safely off the spit at the entrance to the Hokitika River on Monday at midnight, in tow of the p.s. Lioness. The p.s. Charles Edward crossed the bar yesterday morning at nine o'clock. She left Nelson on Sunday at 9 a. in., experienced strong south-west wind on the passage down, and arrived at Westport at 9 a.m. on Monday. Discharged a large cargo, and sailed at 10.30 p m., arriving off this port early next morning. She lauded thirty tons of cargo^for this port, and deck load of sheep, cattle, horses, &., and brings a full passenger list. Leaves at nine this morning, for Hokitika, and returns on Thursday on her way to Westport and Nehon. The B.S. Wainui, Captain Gay, left Auckland on the 22nd January for Levuka, Fiji, with a general cargo and the following passengera :— Messrs Whitlock, W. Elder, R, McDougal ; Mrs Baber, Messrs J. Murchie, R. Andrews, C. Petschler, E. Wilson, Mrs Hamilton, Sarah, Eliza, and Robert Hamilton, Mrs J. Roy, James, Mary, Maggie, and Betsy Roy, Mr Robinson and Mr Oxley. We learn from a Nelson paper that the steamer John Perm, .which for a considerable time was running between Nelson and the West Coast, has been purchased by the French Government for the New Caledonia trade. The Bay of Islands coal is increasing in favor with captains and owners of steamers. Eighteen steamers trading out of Auckland now use this coal alone. The price is 12s per "ton, free on board, at Russell. The ship Asterope has left Napier, for London, with a cargo of wool valued at L 35.066. The cutter Shamrock, valued at L3OO. and which was uninsured, has been wrecked at Whangipoua, Auckland. The ship Thnaru has left Auckland, for London, with a carga valued at L 31,000. The barque Lady Turner, which arrived at Melbourne on 14th January, brings intelligence of a shio named the Beacon Light, frcm Liverpool, having been burned about 400 miles from Tristan d'Acunha, and that the captain and crew had found their way to that island in safety. The information was obtained by the captain of the Lady Turner from an American whaling barque, the Xantho, which was spoken off Tristan d'Acunha, and had a short time previously visited the island, and shipped one of the crew sf the Beacon Light, more to ease the natives than that the services of the man were required, as the maintenance of sp many was a severe tax on the islanders.
