(from odrown correspondents.) ANOTHER DIABOLICAL MURDER BY A COLORED MAN. MEETING OF COUNTY COUNCIL. Christchurch, Jan. 10. A diabolical murder took place yesterday afternoon by a colored man named Cedeno, footman to the Hon. Mr Robinson. During the day the servant maids had been chaffing him about his approaching marriage, when he attacked one with a table knife, cutting her severely, but she escaped. He then pursued another servant into the drawing-room, where she stumbled. He immediately stabbed her to the heart before Mrs Robinson and Mr Campbell, who were in the room, could prevent him. January 11. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon on the body of Margaret Burke, who was killed by Tedona. The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against Cedona. J Mr E. J. Wakefield is a candidate for a Ohristchurch seat in the General Assembly. Hokitika, Jan. 11. The County Council met to-day at noon. All the members were present. The first business was the election of a Chairman. Before going into Council the Councillors went into a private room to agree about the mode of election. After half-an-hour's debating no result was arrived at, and the attempt was given up. Then, upon entering the Council Chambers, Mr Button proposed Mr Bonar, which was seconded by Mr Robinson. Only four members voted in favor of Bonar. Then Mr Bonar proposed Mr Button, but no seconder could be found. A motion of adjournment was then proposed, and was opposed by Messrs Robinson, Bonar, and Button. The latter gentleman, in a very eloquent s speech, remarked that only two' members of that Council were fit to till the Chair, himself and Mr Bouar ; but as they had not the confidence of the Council he should propose the next best, Mr Lahman, in order to bring matters to a close. On the question being put, the adjournment was carried.]
