Melbourne.— The Argus of the 3rd inst. reports : — In the import markets to-day very little of. an interesting character has come under our notice. In the auction rooms Borne few damaged parcels of goods were cleared out, and transactions otherwise have, not been [of j much account. Iv breadstuff's, flour maintains firmness; Ll2 10s per ton, or 12s '6d per cental, is still quoted, but only the commonest brands can be got at that price ; fuir | brands realise Ll2 15s per ton, or 12s 9d per cental ; and for brands in most favor; as much as Ll3 per ton, or 13s per cental, pan be got. There are no sales of wheat to refer .to, T)!it though there is little to be met with in the open market, the millers succeed in obtaining moderate supplies direct from the country. Quotations are very firm, and there is little probability of any alteration at present, notwithstanding tbe decline reported in South Australia. Best samples of Murray wheat realise 5s 9d per bushel, or 9s 7d per cental ; ordinary qualities of Victorian maintain a steady quotation of 53 :6d per bushel, or 9a. 2d percental. Oats are ! offering more freely ; buyers, however, show less indication of a desire to operate. No chance in prices can be reported ; ordinary qualities can be bought at "3s 4d. to 33 5d per bushel, or 8s ,4d. to 8s 6 id per centid, while prime samples of milling are saleable at 3s 6d to 3s 7d per bushel, or 8s 91 to 8s ! 1 l^d per cental. In maize there is less doing; -dealers^ are not so anxious to purchase, and the market altogether presents a weaker appearance. We, however, do not make any change in our quotations, which for trade lots stand at 43 Id to 4s 2d per bushel, or 7s 34d to 7s 54d per; cental. Under the hammer, the damaged portion of tbe Hannah Nicholson's teas was quitted at fair prices ; 197, chests arid 638 halves, in . sound condition, ex same vessel, were disposed of at Is 2d to 13 2Jd. Privately, we hear of a 'line .'of 200. half chests fine congous, ex Mikadb, having been placed at close on 2s. The Wynaud's damaged sugar, amounting to .800. bags, was got rid of at satisfactory prices. A rumor is current of a large sale of rice ; the rumor has not, however,- been authenticated as yet. Candles are attracting more attention ; we hear of some 20QO ; boxes Brandon's haying changed hands on terms withheld.
