GREYMOUTH.
The polling took place on Thursday for ; the return of two members to represent . (jreyrnouth in the County Council. The contest was the most exciting that has ever taken place here, and canvassing for the various candidates was carried on all day with much spirit and great good humor. The only Committee .. that worked systematically was that of Mr Guinness, the result being that he was placed at the head of the poll. After four o'clock an immense crqwd gathered in front of the Court House, and amidst great excitement; Mr Revell,-:the Returning Officer, declared the result as follows : —
The Returning Officer declared Mr ; Guinness and Mr Lahman duly elected. This was received amidst great cheering, yells, and general excitement, during which several of the candidates attempted ( briefly to address the crowd, and, thank them for the support they had" received. ! The people then dispersed. • • ;
