DEPUTATION AT THE AHAURA.
A deputation from the inhabitants of the Ahaura and the surrounding districts waited on his Honor the Superintendent of Nelson, at the Ahaura, on Monday evening, 14th inst. The deputation was introduced by Mr Whitefoord. Mr M'Kbnxa addressed the Superintendent, and read the memorial to which reference was made in our last. His Honor received the address, and briefly commented on the several subjects alluded to in it. With respect to the erection of the Government buildings, he said it could not be denied but they were necessary, but the great difficulty was the want of funds. The direction the road would take from the quartz reefs on the Inangahua to the seaboard would depend on the District Engineer's report as to the most practicable route by which machinery could be brought on to the ground to test the reefs. The making of the main trunk road was dwelt on by the members of the deputation, and it was explained to his Honor that the inhabitants of the township were induced to settle in it bya distinct promise given by Mr Warden Dutton that the road would be made, and as a proof that the promise was given, it was stated that Mr Dutton refused to grant any more licenses at the old' town, except to the keeper of the ferry across the river. His Hokor said, that if Mr Dutton made any such promise, he had outstepped his functions. He would lay the memorial before the members of the Executive Council, on whom the duty of giving a more definite answer to it would devolve. In the meantime he would prepare a reply, which he would deliver at a public meeting to be held later in the evening. The deputation then withdrew.
