Melbourne. —The Age, of the 19th ulfc. says :-- We may perhaps characterise the day as the dullest we have experienced for months past. Even at the usual Tuesday's auction sale the business got through was much below the average. In breadstuff's there is little or nothing doing. Flour stands at Ll2 5s to Ll2 15s for trade lots ; bakers parcels command Ll3. The dealings in wheat arc ou the smallest possible scale, tbe continued paucity of supply putting an entire stop to business; 5s Gd to 5s lOd is the current market quotation ; ior extra fine samples an advance might possibly be obtained. Oats of prime quality arc wanted, and for moderately good samples 3s 5d to 3s Sd can be got, but for really prime parcels of milling sorts an advance on these rates can be obtained. Maize is in very short supply, and the price aslcecl hy some hosiers puts an effectual stop to business. The ordinary quotation ranges at from 4s 2d to 4s 3d. A strong inquiry lias sprung up for brewing sngars, and numerous sales are mentioned as having taken place during the day at from L3G to L 37 for yellow crystals. As the season goes on, the demand for dried fruits seems to gain strength, and the estimated idea of the value of these goods increases day by day. Thider the hammer, 4017 packages of -Bonrbon sugar were disposed of at very satisfactory rates ; grey crystals brought 3Ss 9d ; yellows, 38s 9d ; yellow counters, 34s 6d ; medium do, 32s 9*l to 33s (5d ; low counters, 31s to 31s 9d ; browns, 29s 9d to 30s 9d ; good rations, 27s Od to 28s ; low rations, 2Cs 9d. Candles have been in rather be.tter request, and for parcels in fair condition as much as lOd has been obtained in the auction room . Cornsacks have been placed at 12s for a good sized parcel. Coarse salt comes in occasionally for some inquiry, and we note sales at L 3 163 6d for fair sized lots.
