Chbistchurch. — The Lyttelton Timen of Saturday last reports: — If anything, a little more animation has been evinced in the grain market. Purchasers, however, are rather chary in operntinj! at low rates, while holders in store show but little inclination to reduce values, a* the prices ruling in Otago and Auckland should leave a fair margin of prolib at 4s 6d. Several good-sized lines have changed hands in store at 4s 7d, and other sales are reported of good wheat, for forward delivery, at quotations ranging from 4s 3d to 4s 4d. Millers have great difficulty in placing flonr at LI 2, and for a heavy parcel a concession would no doubt be made to effect a sale. Oats have improved somewhat in demand, but values remain unaltered. Good potato oats, ready for shipment, have been placed at 2s 7d ; the price given to farmers ranges from 2s 4d to 2s 6d, according to quality. Barley remains inactive. Provisions meet with a fair inquiry. Butter has not come forward so freely as anticipated, consequently quotation remain at 7£d to 8d for export. Stocks of cheese are almost cleared out, and values remain firm at 7d to 7£d for prime quality. Hams and bacon are not so active at last week's rates. Potatoes rauge from 22s to 255, with but little prospect of iinprovemenb.
