Auckland via Nelson, Out. 5. Mr Vogol is announced to stand for the Frankly n district. At the Thames Provincial election Mr Mitchell was returned by a large majority. The Carandinis sail for San Francisco in the Wonga Wonga on Friday next. One hundred diggers are about to leave Queensland by the James Paterson for the Coromandel diggings. There have been some splendid crushings ; several claims yielding from seven to fifteen ounces to the ton. The Golden Crown reef has been struck in the Otago claim. The Shotover claim got 1500 ounces during the past month. Arrived. — October Ist, Comcrang ; October 2nd, Keera, from Napier. Sailed. — October Ist, Reseca, for Valparaiso ; October 2nd, Cleopatra, for Lyttelton, with timber; October 3rd, Couierang, for Napier. The Governor and Superintendent visit Waiuku to-morrow respecting a divergence of the Wailtato. The barque Cantero, by order of the Vice-Admiralty Court, waa sold this morning, and bought by Mr Campbell for LSOO. B. Tonks has sold the stores of the Samson. Mr Fraser reports the following prices to-day: — Inbond,Hennessy's case brandy, 27s 6d; rum, 4s lid; geneva, 11s 3d; sherry, 2s 3d a gallon. Napier, Oct. 4. A messenger from Makarini, at Waikaremoana Lake, has arrived, and states thatsickness prevails amongst the Urewera tribe. Mohi, a Wairoa native, who went with Makarini, ia dead from sickness. They dread lest Mohi's death should be attributed to murder. Makarini is coming in to surrender with thirty men. He reports Te Kooti at Tewara, and Te Warn at Rna Tatima. Nelson, Oct. 5. Taranaki news is limited. Tito passed through Opunaki, and his followers robbed a flax mill of some small articles. They also stole sixty sheep belonging to the friendly natives, ar>d refused to return them. The friendlies went in pursuit, but were driven back by an armed force of rebels. The friendlies were very angry and held a meeting. They said this was sufficient cause for fighting. The Europeans preveuted their following to fight. Tito ultimately left the sheep, except ten, which had been eaten, a3 he was afraid of the friendlies fighting him. The flax mills in various parts of the country are all working. A smart shock of earthquake was felt at Taranaki at 2.20 p.m. on Monday. It lasted fifteen seconds. Some chimnies were moved and goods knocked off shelves. Arrived— Phoebe, lust night, and left early this morning for the North ; the Airedale this morning from the North, and leaves this afternoon. Timauu, Oct. 5. . The Timuru Herald strongly complains of the Government delaying Press messages, and suggests a meeting of all interested at some central place, to take such steps as will effectually protect jthe interests of the Press against conduct inimical to its freedom. The action of the Government in the late English Mail matter it declares to be dangerous, despotic, and dishonest. The Herald complains that last month it did not receive either Suez or San Francisco summaries until the day after they had been sent to all the other papers. It also urges some 'united action to reduce the cost of messages where a number of journals receive the same one, as in England aud America. DITNEDItf, Oct. 5. The Telegram question is attracting attention. The Daily Times points out that the restriction of only sending 200 words of the last mail telegrams, and then breaking for private purposes, is contrary to the printed regulations of the Telegraph Department, and the Government imposed the restriction unlawfully. It is believed that the arrival of the Gothenburg with the mail telegrams was made known on Thursday night in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington. The fact was known here.
