Melbourne. — The Argus of the 20th ill* reports :— In the import markets a fair amount of business has been transacted. Breadstuff's maintain a good deal of quietness and want of animation, and the business transacted has been of but limited extent. Trade parcels of flour continue to be disposed of at LI 2 15s to LI 3, but nothing special beyond that has come under our notice ; the larger bu3*crs continue to offer Ll2 10s to LI 2 12s 6d, without, however, leading to business Wheat is very firm at 5s 6d to 5s 9d, but no quantity can be got hold of. Oats are in good demand, aud sales of ordinary qualities are made at 3s sd, while as much as 3s 7d has been paid for a good parcel of Tasmaniau. Maize is selling more freely at 3s 9d in qu.anHities, and 3s lOd is obtained for smaller lots.
The Patna rice just arrived per Envoy was offered under tho hammer tins forenoon, but as the biddings proved unsatisfactory the whole had to be withdrawn ; subsequently, the entire shipment, amounting to 4800 ba«s, was cleared off in one line, at a price withheld. New teas, ex Albyn's Isle, still command attention, as the trade are beginning to find out and appreciate their really fine quality. We learn of some 700 packages, chests and halves (chiefly the latter), having been quitted, at prices ranging from Is 6£d to 2s. A small parcel of gunnies (22 bales), ex Envoy, was quitted at Bs. Dried fruits meet with favor ; we learn of as much as 4£d having been given for a line of about 500 boxes old Cape raisins, which cleared out one holder. Hops are somewhat inactive ; we note, however, an improving demand. Some considerable parcels of Tasmanian will be offered by auction to-morrow. An inquiry for candles in the morning led to the disposal of about 1500 boxes in parcels, at 10*jd and 1 1 cl. Shortly afterwards, however, the Neva Company's agents issued a notice that they had advanced the price of their brand to Is ; and as this had the effect of raising the views of holders generally, any further business has in the meantime been checked, buyers being careless to grant a ready response to the movement. As much as lid was subsequently offered for a line of 500 boxes, and refused. In tobaccoes, we have little to refer to, but we observe a parcel advertised for sale on Wednesday. In brandies, we note the sale of a shipment of Prunnier's pale and dark, in bulk. Some extensive parcels of various first-class brands will be submitted to public competition to-morrow forenoon.
