GENERAL SUMMARY AND DETAILS OF LATE BATTLES.
The Crown Prince attacked Marshal M'Mahon at Woerth, and after an obstinate engagement M'Mahon was defeated with a loss of 10,000 killed and 6000 prisoners, comprising 100 officers, together with thirty guns, four metrailleura, two eagles, baggage, couimissiariat, &c, end-, ing in a complete rout. The German loss was 4000. An attempt was made to reform, and make a stand at Neiderbroun ; but the Bavarians took the position and M'Mahon retreated on Laverne. The Germans, under Henmity, attacked Frossard's corps near Saarbmck. The battle lasted from noon till dark, with great carnage. Frossard retreated. The Germany military system is complete. The French generalship is much criticised. The French army concentrated at Metz is estimated at two hundred and thirty thousand. Bazaine is chief in command, with Canrobert and Changarnier. Strasbourg has a weak garrison. The French Baltic expedition is abandoned. The condition of Paris is alarming ; the Government is unable to pacify the people. Iv the Legislature, a stormy debate, much recrimination, and even blows were exchanged. The abdication of the Emperor was demanded. The Emperor was asked by his friends to return to Paris. He replied— " Only dead or victorious." England neutral ; but a treaty for the protection of Belgium between the belli.
gerents has been entered into with England. Five million pounds were voted for tho English army and navy ; and 20,000 men are being recruited. The arsenals are busy. Chartering coal direct to the French or Prussian fleet is prohibited. Commercial reports shoiy a steady decrease in export value.
