Canterbury.—The Lyttelton Times of Saturday last reports : - There has been a considerable amount of activity displayed in the grain market during the week. Good dry parcels of wheat are very saleable at 4s 8d to 4s 9d, at which figures several large sales have transpired. It is reported that sales have been made at ss. There is a good inquiry for the North, and as stocks of this cereal are getting into fewer hands, a further advance will in all probability take place. The millers have advanced the price of flour to Ll2, but at this figure few sales have resulted beyond those for present requirements. A good mauy samples of oats have been offering during the week, but few sales have taken place. Holders are very firm at 2s 7d to 2s 8d f&r potato oats, and in several instances this has been given for immediate shipment, but generally purchasers have taken a stand at 2s 5d to 2s 6d. A few unimportant sales of barley have been made at nominal quotations. In provisions, the demand has been far from active, and butter is getting somewhat in. excess of consumption at 7id to7fd. Cheese continues to realise 6Jd to 6£d for export. Bicon and hams a c not so much in request at 7|d to 84d. The Timaru, and Gladstone Gazette of the 21st September reports : —From our Temuka correspondent we learn that one of the largest sales of wheat that has taken Slace this season by one firm was made by [r J. Mendelson/who last week disposed of 10.000 bushels in Dnncdin, but the price has not transpired. Mr Mendelson is still a very large holder, and has purchased a further supply of 15.000 bushels to be delivered as threshed.
