The s.s. Kennedy sailed for the North at five a. in. on Tuesday, and arrived at Westport the same day. The s.s. Murray, Captain Palmer, arrived at the wharf on Tuesday night, from Nelson, Motueka, Westport, and Hokitika. She discharged a large cargo of produce yesterday, and sailed last night on her return northern trip. The s.s. Rangifcoto, from Melbourne direct, is due today. On arrival she will take passengers for Nelson, all New Zealand ports and Melbourne via the Bluff. The s.s. Claud Hamilton is announced to leave this port to-morrow for Melbourne direct. She will take passengers for transhipment to Sydney and Adelaide. The Steamer Wonga Wonga, which left Auckland at 3 p.m., on the 7th August, reached Honolulu at 10 a.m., on the 24th. The steamer left on her return trip at 7.30, pm., on the 26th, and reached Auckland at the same hour on the 13th instant. On the afternoon of ..the 21st ultimo, one of the saloon passengers accidentally fell overboard, the ship at the time going nearly ten knots. Life buoys were at once thrown out, and the engiues immediately reversed full speed, aud in a few minutes, when wittin a quarter of a mile of the spot, one of the quarter boats •was lowered, and, in charge of the chief officer,, was pulled towards him. The gentleman appeared to be complecely exhausted wheu the boat reached him, and he was taken out of the water quite unconscious. Ou being brought on board and placed under the care of the surgeon," he soon recovered. On the 4th September, at 5 a.m., the wind fresh from the S.E. and ship under all sail, the fore and maintopsails, together with their lower mast-heads, came down, with all sails attached. The ship was at once stopped to prevent 1 fouling the wreck, and to repair the foreyard. On the 7th, a disarrangement ocunrring to the machinery, the engines were stoppled for seventeen hours, and the wind being very light, the ship made little headway. On the Bth, one of the seaman, who had been ill for some time previously, died. The Norwegian barque Svalen, of 800 tons, bound from Montreal to London with a cargo of timber, was abandoned by her crew on the passage on the 18th of October last, and who were picked up and brought into Falmouth on the 7th of November. After drifting about no one knows where, for nine months, the Svalen was found by the steamer Dania off the English coast, and brought safely into port. The insurance had long been paid on the vessel by the underwriters. The cargo of the vessel was all safe, and the cabin furniture and fittings in good preservation. The other night the schooner Zephyr, of Durham, laden with gas coal, aud lying in Sunderland Dock, blew up. The hatches had been battened down ready for sea, and only a cabin boy was left on board. The gas had accumulated in the cabin, and when the boy went in the explosion occurred. The cabin was literally blown to pieces, the decks were blown up, the mainboom broken, and great damage was done. The boy was blown twenty yards from the vessel into the water, and was picked up with his head partially blown off; he died soon after.
