THE ANNEXATION BILL. THE CLYDE GOLD ROBBERY.
[from our own correspondents.] Wellington. Sept. 9. Last night Mr Yogel moved the second reading of the Tariff Bill in a brief speech. Messrs Borlase and Bunny moved that the second reading be that clay six months. A long and interesting debate ensued. On a division the Bill was thrown out by 26 to 16. For the amendment there voted : Messrs Borlase, Bunny, Baigent, Barff,.Bradshaw, Crown, Carleton, Clarke, Duignan, Eyes, W. H. Harrison, Jollie, Kenny, Kynnersley, Ludlam, M'lndoe, M'Gillivray, Munro, Ormond, Russell, Richmond, Stafford, Swan, Taylor, Wells, Woods. For the Bill : Messrs Brandon, Ca-r---rington, Fox, Hall, H. S. Harrison, Kelly, M'Lean, Moorlmuse, Rolleston, Studholme, Tancred, Yogel, Williamson, and Wilson. Mr Yogel afterwards said that as no object could be served by returning the duties already collected, he would introduce a short Bill to legalise the collection up to the end of September. The Westland Boundaries and Government Bill was discharged from the paper without a division. Mr Harrison spoke very bitterly of Mr Vogel's conduct iv the matter. 4.45 p.m. MrGisborne, in the Legislative Council, stated to-day that Parliament would be kept sitting till the English mail arrived, as the Governor's dispatches might show that some special legislation was required, owing to the European war. The prorogation will not take place to-morrow. The Luna has been sent to Nelson specially for the mail, and is expected back to-morrow. Dunedin, Sept. 9. The trial of Rennie and M'Lennau in the gold robbery case at Clyde began on -Weilne.s_day.__mc)rning, and jwasjponcluded last night at nine o'clock. ~
Rennie pleaded gnilly and gave evidence for the Crown. The verdict for M'Lennan was " Not Guilty." The Judge's charge was favorable te M'Lennan There was great applause in Cjurt when the result was made known. Rennie was sentenced this morning to six years' penal servitude. . Auckland, September 5. Napiek, Sept. 8. The Har.n au's cargo has been sold, and brought :— Flour, Ll2 11s to Ll2 13s ; oats, 3s 6d to 33 7d ; half-bags oatmeal, LlB 10s ; bran, Is 3d ; cheese, 9J. Napieb, Sept. 8. The Keera arrived from Auckland at 7 a.m. Mr Bruce, managing contractor, has been lost between Taupo and Runango. His horse, minus the saddle and bridle, has. been found. Native tracks, supposed to be those of Han Haus, have been discovered crossiug 1 Brucs's tracks. Snow is lying from four to two feet deep. The] purchase of 480,000 acres of the 70-mile bush, for the purpose of immigration aud settlement, is "nearly completed. Christchuroh, Sept. 8. At the Criminal Court, yesterday, Bush, alias Eldrich, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment for forgery and uttering.
Matthew Macwa (Maori), charged with perjury, was discharged.
Taylor, alias Thompson, for forgery, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment. The Dioceseau Synod was opened yesterday by the Bishop. Wanganvi, Sept. 9. The Storm Bird arrived here this morning from Auckland. • On the 7th the Aboukir arrived from London.
Tho City of Melbonrne from Sydney leaves for San Fraucisco this evening with 80 passengers. The Governor of Victoria has not received any official despatches concerning the war. Mr Verdon's despatches have not arrived. It is supposed they have missed the mail ; both despatches are expected via California, with instructions from the Imperial Government relative to the war. German telegrams say that after the battle of Weissenbourg, the Prussians followed the French army into France, and everywhere were to be found proof [ of the battle being a great defeat to the French. In breadstuffs, grain in Melbourne is declining. Then is great speculation for a rise in brandy through the war. A true bill has been found against Jones, Deputy -"-Commissary-General at Auckland, for embezzlement.
