Ouly Hone Te Hone and one Maori was to go. : Taipari, native chief at Shoftland, has filed his schedule. A fire has occurred at Watson and Scanlan's, painters' shop, Queen street. The stock destroyed was insured for LBOO in the New Zealand office, and LI6OO in the Victoria. The,valiie of it was L 3500. Paterson, Ray and Co.'s traveller had L3OO worth of Melbourne samples in the store, which were all destroyed. Three men have been arrested for the watch robbery at Grahamstown. Fiftyone watches were found in their possession. Barley is dull, at 3s 6d to 3s 9d. Southern flour, Ll3 to Ll4. ■ Napier, August 30. Rumor states that Ropata intends to organise an expedition to Ngatiporou on hia own account to search for Te Kooti in spring. The mounted constabulary scouts at Wairoa took a Maori prisoner- named Hemi Kopua, who was the bearer of a letter from Te Whenuananui to a Wairoa Chief expressing hia willingness to surrender with 100 men. Two other Urewera Chiefs, with seventy men, are on their way to surrender to Mr Clarke atMaketu. The prisoner states that if the Uriwera come across Te Kooti, they will seize him and hand him over to the Government natives. The spirit of the Uriwera tribe is evidently broken. Tongairiro was very active last night. Repeated reports very similar to those from a large piece of ordinance were heard three miles off, and clouds of smoke were perceptible over the volcano. Nelson, Aug. 30. The Pheebe has just arrived. She was bar-bound at the Manakau for four days, when it was blowing a hurricane. She left on Saturday along with the Taranaki, which lay off New Plymouth all night. The Phoebe left, intending to anchor off the West Cape all night, but found she was able to come on. The Taranaki will be here to-night. The weather is very bad. A fire on board the ship Excelsior, at Queen street wharf, Auckland, on Saturday night, was happily suppressed before any great damage was done, through the influence of the captains and crews of the neighboring vessels shutting off all atmospheric communication. The decks and beams were charred. Damage, L 50 0; chiefly to cargo consigned to Napier. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire. It is considered a very narrow escape to the vessels and the wharf, and also from the danger by the close proximity of the powder magazine, the removal of which, is now urged. The Golden Crown Claim cleaned up on Saturday morning, with 17740z for the week and declared a dividend of L 25 per share. The Alburnia Claim got 1560z for the week, and the Una Claim 102oz for the fortnight. Masters of small crafts at Auckland are being fined for not carrying lights. The Thames papers say that coal and quicksilver are scarce there. Donjsdin, August 26. The Provincial Government has received an offer from Audley Coote, Tasmania, agent of the English Capitalists Company (Registered), London, for the construction of a railway from Dunedin to Clutha, with the Provincial guarantee of 6 per cent, for 30 years on the amount expended, and the right of purchase by the Government at twelve mouths' notice after five years, the company dividing with the Government'the netiprodts beyond 7 per cent.
