OTAGO.
A mining claim at Moke Creek, the Wahatip Mailreportß, has lately changed hands for a large sum . The p urclidsers are Chinese. Since the 3ale was made, Europeans have been anxious to re-purchase it. The claim would have long ago beezj a valuable one had itbeen systematically worked. Over L9OO was expended on it, and the Chinese will, when the frosts disappear, show its value. — The same journal has the following remarks regarding the Chinese miners in the Lake district : — It is rather astonishing to find how coolly "John" puts up with the present inclement season. Resignation — except under peculiar circumstance — is a feature of the Chinese career amongst us. He will not tamely suffer renewed indignities, and makes for the moment, a great fuss— like a goose— over some trifling mishap. But a more serious loss does not shake his equanimity. We were curious "to know, you Know," how the Mongolians liked our winter 3eason, and especially such a severe one as this. "Cost to much money for bed, blankets, clothes," said one. Another of his chilblains. Another, it was all play and no work. And one who seemed never intended for work, said he liked it, while the others laughed at him. Probably he was the loafer of that crowd. All united, however, in saying "plenty wood, plenty fire, plenty tucker," and few complained of the coal. In fact, in that respect they take far more case of thttmsalves than Europeans, and it is astonishing how much clothes they, can put on. The strangest feature is, that the Victorian and Sydney miners like the change, and say they feel better. By messing together Jn communities they hare always a good comfortable warm room, and their several tents are kept snug. "John," on the whole, will do well here. No deaths from natural causes have yet taken place amongst them.
