The pavement of modern Rome is excellent. Each stone has the form of a blunt wedge — eight inches in length — which, when laid on the principle of the arch, yrows more compact and durable the more it is travelled over. It also wears smoothly. A miraculous draught of fishes is described by a correspondent as having taken place at Lixhe, Belgium. Obstructions iv the river Meuse prevent tho shad which swarm there ab this season, from coming farther up than Vise* bnt below that the fishermen spread their nets in grand style. On the 13th ult., a single person took at one cast, 481 shad ; at the second, 197 ; at the third, 87 ; and at the fourth, 85 ; making in all 850 fish, weighing, together 2125 kilogrammes, between five o'clock in the morning and five in the evening. >This shad fishing is carried on every Tuesday until the end of May, and the 6sh arc sent to Maestricht for the famons fair of St. Servals, as well as to Liege and the surrounding cities.
