Melbourne.— The drgus, of the 6th inst., reports : - The import markets have not been characterised by much activity ; there is, however, a moderate inquiry for merchandise, though^ sales are only conducted on a limited scale. Breadstuff's are steady, but notwithstanding theee is still a fair demand for trade purposes, there is less doing than during the week. Flour is moved off at Ll2 to Ll2 ss ; at the former figuie a line of 50 tons was : cleared off, and we understand that LI 2 ss, short terms, was likewise offered for another parcel of equal size. In wheat there is nothing whatever to report ; 5s 6d to 5s 7d. can now, however, be readily obtained for good Victorian, offers at these quotations Being freely made. Oats maintain our quotatation of 3s 7d to 3s 9d, but we learn of one parcel having been sold at a lower figure than either of those named. We note an improved inquiry for sugar. Aline of 1000 bags of yellow crystals was. cleared off this afternoon at- a very full figure. Under the hammer some 52 cases Braby's galvanised iron, 26---gauge, castle brand, were disposed of at from L 23 10s to L2B 13s 6d. The sales of timber comprise comprise 36,000 ft clear pine, ex Competitor, which realised Lls to Ll6 per 1000. Kice shows litble animation. By private telegram intelligence has been received that the only departure for the colonies from Calcutta during the mouth was the Envoy ; there was zio other vessel loading. Caudles are said to be firmer, lOf d being now generally rsquirek for best brands ; holders are decidedly stiffer ; buyers, on the other hand, do not as yet show much disposition to concede any advance. Trade parcels of kerosene oil continue oil continue to be moved off at 2s 3d. In bulk brandies we do not hear of much beyond what has beeen already what has been already reported. Case brandies are more inquired for, aud as stocks of Hennessy's have -become much reduced, holders are now asking 27s 3d. A shipment of 10 per cent. o.p. rum, hhds. and quarters, was quitted at 3s 3d, Sales of Tennant's bottled ale v are reported at 9s 6d.
