GENERAL GOVERNMENT SUPPORTING ANNEXATION.

LARGE FAILURE IN DUNEDIN.
Wellington, August 12. The Colonial Treasurer announced last night that the Government intended to bring in a Bill to annex the Grey District to Nelson. Westland ia to have a nominated Chairman for three years. An extra special allowance of L3OOO has been granted to Westland. Mr Kynnersley has given notice of a motion in favor of completing the West Coast Marine Survey. August 10. Messrs Richmond, Stafford, Carleton, Nelson, and Driver, followed up Mr Fitzherbert's arguments on the Public Works and Immigration Bill. Mr Yogel, in reply, said Government would not accept indiscriminate amendments. If the Act was found defficiert it could be. amended next session. The Act must work out its own perfection by practical experience.
The Government would assent to the appointment of a responsible Minister of Works and Immigration with one or more Boards to advise him. In Messrs Bell and Featherstone'a absence they were not prepared to say who would be the minister of the new department.
j The House next went into Committee without a division, but immediately resumed, and the House adjourned. . The Imprest Supply Bill has passed. Ohristchurch, August 12. • An open air meeting was held here this afternoon of the unemployed. Two hundred were present, includiug many spectators. A resolution was carried to the effect that this meeting regrets the large number of competent workmen unemployed in the Province who cannot get away. 2nd. It, is expedient they should write, bringing those facts before the General and Provincial Governments,
and to- urge upon the electors, &c, the absolute necessity of taking immediate steps to supply work at reasonable wages, by public works, or otherwise, previous to increasing the existing distress by future importations of labor. 3rd. That a Committee be appointed to carry out these resolutions. Mr Wakefield was the chief speaker. Mr Moorehouse was returned to the House of Representatives for the city of Christchurch to-day, without opposition. His speech contained nothing of importance. Dunedin, August 12. Another large failure has taken place, namely, Kirkpatrick and Co., drapers, Princes street. Their liabilities are nearly LI 5,000; assets, about LSOOO.
