[advertisement.] AN ADDRESS TO IHE IRISH • PEOPLE OF NEW ZEALAND, On BEHALF OF THE WIVES & FAMILIES Of the IRISH STATE PRISONERS. At a meeting, held at the Stoney Lead a few months ago, it was unanimously resolved that the districts of the We3t Coast Gold Fields be canvassed for contributions for -the Irish Patriotic Relief Fund; and further, that an address be presented to the liberal and humane public for funds in aid of the charitable movement. Now that it , if -believed sufficient time since a notification of the meeting was recorded in the Grey River Argus, the Managing' Committee beg to submit the address , to , a generous people, whose aid in the work of charity or cause of country has never yet been solicited in vain. Letters have already reached our shores, em* bodying a prayer for assistance. They havd borne tidings of sorrow' and distress;" accotn* ; ; panied by the gloomy forebodings that the ... future will be only a continuation of the ". dark chapter of the past, unless prompt assistance be tendered. ■ ■■■-•■>■■ The abstract question of the expediency flf * morality of the course pursued, by f. the ■■' Irish Political Prisoners,', many of jp)ioiu.r are still detained in English dungjeQQsV.w immaterial to the point at issue. ' Ou'r'syM- " pathies are requested for their wives andi'aimlies. Doubtless th§y meant. toV;fcrve their country by a severance of the connection with Great Britain, and to make her the independant nation which,. many and abler men laid dowji their lives to accomplish. The great record of "bur country furnishes numerous instances of personal Bsxrfices, of imprisonment, transportation, and death for the cause to which we are invited to respond. Ever since the Second Henry invaded the shores of our native landj ,since that disastrous period, what pen c»a describe the hangings, the qaarterings, thegibbetiogß, which have surcharged the history of bur island in the cause of nationality ? no mercy for the patriot, emenatrag fromithe Crown ; no toleration, but a penal inhuman code for the child of Catholicity. If we search" the annals of other nations, where can we find nobler examples of generosity of heart, and tractability of disposition ? What nation can give a more enduring monument of the Unquestionable valor of her sons in the cause : ■ lof another country, and . such lamentable . ' •• ■ defeats in the cause of 'her own ?'
