SOUTH BEACH.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT;)' ■ ' ; : ;.. Aug.^,^. Considerable interest was manifested amongst the miners last week from the" report that Messrs Rodgers and Co. had been successful in getting payable* gol£f» It will be remembered that this Company had taken up ground ■' to." the south of Keith and Co., and that they had erected a small wheel for the purpose of testing their claim prior to building one of largerdimensions. They are now reported have been highly successful, arid the con-' sequence has been that ; the ground lying between them and the Junction Gardens has since been taken up. This may almost be said to be maiden ground," as very little work was originally done, so that there may be hopes of it paying well. Messrs Keith and Co. fur the future will be known as the Cooperative* 7 Company. They have at last brought their gigantic undertaking to an end, and are now in working order. They have been engaged. upwards of four., months in bringing in water from the Leviathan Race, erecting high fluming, and building a magnificent wheel, which has met with universal approbation. This work has* eclipsed anything of the kind that hasf been, attempted north of the Tereraakau; in fact, it may be said to be" the ''first attempt that has been m^de in this district to make water-wheels .draw .trucks/ up a steep. incline. On, Friday' last they were in a position to test the efficiency of their machine and to sco the trucks travelling up an incline about one in; three, and then run along the platform^; tip itself, return, and run down again! This shewed clearly that the engineers of this intricate and splendid machine were thorough masters of their work. There is very little doubt that the co-operative wheel will be copied by others on the lead, as it is clear even tea novice that an immense amount of manual labor - must be saved, independent entirely of>> the larger quantity of stuff that can thuV? be run through,^ v lt is well-known that as> little gold is to be found from the surface, and that it by a ready way of working can be made to pay, but 'the great want has been a proper fall ; this the Co-operative ', Company have- provided for, so that/with ' a good supply of water and the trucks"? constantly going, it" is expected! to payf v exceedingly well. Independent of the'"*-' 9 top sand it is believed that payable black, sand exists below that formerly worked, . and which, could not then be tried from the want of proper drainage. . ft is different , row, for whilst trucks loaded can be made to run ivn.steep inclines, California pumps can be workedrtakeep down the. water, i i Science is now being used/taassist manual^ labor, which was formerly poverJessswfcaiC water in large quantities was encountered ; and it is to be hoped there yet may be many golden black sand seams to reward. . companies who use skill, labor, and capital in developing the resources of the district.
