TASMANIA.

[launceston examiner.] J A trial lot of quartz from the Specimen Gully claim, about Barker's Creek, gave 6oz to 20 tons, crushed at the London and Manchester machine. The washing at the Sardines Reef, Q. M. C. of 58 tons* of stone resulted hi a great disappointment, the yield being only 3£oz of amalgam, although the stone frequently showed gold. One of the directors has been deputed ta visit the mine to inquire into the cause, and decide on future operations. The stone in the bottom looks well, and is about 2ft wide, but cannot be raised on t account of the water till the engine shaft has been sunk to a greater depth. Steps are being taken for doing so.

The Fenton or Old Man Reef Company continue to occupy the Achilles battery, and are crushing about 14 tons daily. The stone yields well, from loz to l£oz to the ton, and occasionally the cleaning off shows more, reaching near 2oz. .The United Kingdom Company are progressing. At the Mosquito reef, Coliban, good payable prospects have been obtained. Gold is to be obtained in every dish of stuff washed. We are glad to be able to report that the Nelson Company, Taradale, struck the reef on Tuesday with Capital prospects. It is expected that before long the Energetic Company's machinery will be completed.
