SOUTH BEACH.

(from our own correspondent.) July 27. . The Golden Gate Company have now been over a year in occupation of their ground, and ever since they struck gold they have been extremely fortunate in making excellent wages. They have a splendid tramway laid to facilitate the transmission of timber for underground work. Although this took some time to complete, the company are now reaping the benefits of it. They were assisted in this work by the Caledonian Company, who have, however, not been so successful in their undertaking. The wet weather a few weeks since greatly retarded them, in fact has been partly the cause of work being suspended. The claim being registered it is intended to try it again when the ground is not so -wet. The Age of Progress Company still continue to work their ground with advantage to themselves. This party, like the Golden Gate, are to be congratulated in securing ground that pays them handsomely, considering the immense work that was performed by Whelau and Co. and the Pioneer Co. with little results. The All Nations claim is still being worked profitably to the shareholders ; they have a very fine face, and have a good way of working. The North Star Co. is very busy, some shareholders are engaged stripping and others washing. To see them at work puts one in mind of a hive of bees, each one doing his best for the general welfare of all. A very good prospect can be taken from the solid ground ; in fact, the prospect cannot help being good when the stones are literally covered with gold. They have made a pretty good-sized hole in their ground, aud it is to be hoped that the remainder will all prove as rich as what they have at the present time. Messrs Stansell and Co., the adjoining party, have already washed up one small paddock, which paid them extremely well; considering the small size of the paddock •the ground ranks with the richest yet opened on the Stoney Lead. This party are now bnsy stripping the remaining portion of the paddock which will prove the actual wealth of the lead, and should it be as rich as the westerly one it will indeed be a prize. It is now nearly three years siuce a large party of men, from the Blacksaud aud Terrace Lead, spent at the least three months in prospecting between 'his very ground and opposite the Nelson. They brought up the long head-race — that is still to be seen — and prospected close to where the North Star have got their good gold, and yet they missed it. They even had the use of the boring machine, but luck was against them. To the south of Messrs Stansell Co., Messrs I Gourlay and Co. are met with. They have (proved the existence of gold in payable ! quantities, and they are in hopes of the next paddock equalling their sanguine expectations. Next to them is a remnant of the old Homeward Bound Co. They are working now from their northerly boundary. Altogether this portion of the Stoney Lead has a lively appearance, aud contrasts favorably with the days of yore, when it was a dense bush covered with water.
