THE THAMES. [SOUTHERN CROSS, JULY 19.] Royal Standard : 23 tons from this mine were finished to-day at the Hape Creek machine. 2oz return is nearly certain. Hape Creek machine commences on Monday on a parcel of Golden Spur stone, of which great things are expected. Perry's M.ichine, Karaka : The machine is crushing for the Moa and the Pacific claims Stone from the Atlantic claim will reoccupy the battery. Golden Crown': Although the full force of the company's battery was only in play during three days of this week, the return of gold is 2670z, which-, being retorted, was lodged in the Bank of New Zealand, and after melting weighed 2580z 13dwt 12gr. 20 tons of stuff from the main low level yielded 35£oz. The lode in' the main level is looking" well upon the new lode. The new lode is more mullocky than it was, but is worth quite 2oz to the ton. The lode below improves in quality as it is followed towards the Caledonian boundary. Shotover Company : A little leader, about three inches wide, and highly auriferous, was cut in the cross level, ■£ towards the Junction boundary. It is ' ' -faiLof gold. FlJ^w Cloud Company : 35 tons yielded 81oz 18awt of retorted gold ; lodged in the Bank of Australasia for melting. Duke of Magenta : This mine is again being vigorously worked, and with good prospect of ultimate success. CoROMANDEL. r. [CORRESPONDENT OF SOUTHERN CROSS.] ''■^A. general meeting of the shareholders in the Golden Belt Claim was held at the Beach last week, when it was resolved that advertisements should be placed in the Thames papera for a working manager. Eventually Mr Frederic Preece was elected to the post. A resolution was then passed to adjourn the meeting to the following day, cm the claim, at 12 o'clock. The secretary and others having reached their destination, being plentifully dotted with mod by such an unenviable journey, the working manager was conducted all over the workings by the committee of management, two hours being spent in inspecting the numerous points of importance. It waa resolved that about 100 tons of 4foartz should be blocked out from the . Jogh ievel, and that a low level should be *begun tip the creek, in order to open up the large auriferous leader. The managing
coaicaittee have every reason to believe that this ground will prove one of the most valuable claims on this gold field. The indications of richness at present developed point to a large return of the precious metal at an early period. Before the secretary and his visitors departed, a large lot of valuable specimens were inspected—some marvellous for their richness and beauty — which were brought to grass last week, and will be crushed at once. The battery now in course of erection on the Matawi is within a mile of this splendid claim, aud a roadway will be made to it. By the time this plant will be in readiness for crushing, it is anticipated that sufficient quartz will be to grass from the claim to keep all the stampers fully occupied for six months. From the free manner in which the gold is seen in the stene, a return of between five and six ounce to the ton is confidently looked for. — Ring's battery is now crushing a lot of specimens from the Tokatea claim, which will give a magnificent return. The general stuff will be sent to the Whakaroa Battery ; and I am glad to note that an addition has been made to the equestrian force of this gold field — a want much needed — which are to be employed in sledging quartz from the Tokatea claim to the battery. — The crushing of 7 tons from the City of Dublin at the Nil Desperandum Battery has not come up to the expectations of the hard-working shareholders, the yield being only 3|ozs of melted gold. This battery will be employed on a lot of stuff from the Harbor View in a few days, when the return will certainly be a good one.— l am told that the shareholders in the Excelsior claim have declared a dividend of L 25 per share.
