THE The Drey River Argus. SATURDAY, JULY 23, 1870.
Telegrams from Wellington bring us news ' «f the close of the great debate which has been occupying the attention of the country for the last fortnight, and the adoption by the House of Representatives of the general principles of the Colonial Treasurer's financial policy ; but N;he principal features of it are to be so much modified, in deference to the expressed wishes of some of the loading .members of the House^ that it is impossible to say what shape these proposals may yet assume.- There is little doubt that when the Government bills embodying their policy are brought down,, they will be so mutilated in Committee, that the real questions at issue will have to be put to the constituencies during the approaching general election. We had intended to point out at length what the proposed modifications are likely to be, but we postpone further remark in consequence of the arrival, late last night, of th« letter of our special correspondent at Wellington, which bears . more- directly upon the question. -
