THE THAMES,

[southern cross, jvly 7.] Shotover Company : The quantity of gold extracted from the Shotoyer mine during the month just expired was lodged " and melted at the Union Bank to-day,' the return being 13940z 17dwt. The Hauraki machine has disposed of 193 tons of stone for Dixon's No. 1 Company during the past month, the total yieid beiug 3680z. The batteries of the machine are undergoing a few needful repairs, and will start again on Monday next on a large parcel. of stuff from Kelly's claim.. *' ■ Souter's Machine : 124 tons of Btone have been crushed at *.his machine during the month, with a return of 2300z I7dwt 12gr. The Tramway machine has been busy

during the past month, the ten head of J stampers having got through 283 tons 12cwt, the yield from which was 5360z vLldwt. Of this quantity 14 tons and 9 came from the Imperial Crown mine, and gave 550z aud 4oz ; Belfabt, Company, 26 tons, 230z ; Beach Company, 33 tons, 20pz ; Cure Company, 10 tons, 350z ; Flying Cloud, 55. tons, 520z : Royal Oak, ' Coronmndel, 2001 b, 38oz ; Shotover, 101 tons, 2500z. Just in Time : A first crushing of 49 tons gave4Sk>z ; and a second, from which. 68oz of ;gold has been obtained, is proceeding. • ■ » The Inverness Company: 80 tons are through, and gave 1320z, and there were ilOOoz of hard squeezed amalgam on hand this morning. ' : ■ . Middle Star, Heavy Yield : This claim, from which such heavy returns have been from time to time obtained, is re-asserting its right to be ranked amongst the first- | class gold producers by producing quartz i that yields over 12oz to the ton. A crushing of some good stone had been going on for several days at the Middle Star battery, and 103oz of retorted gold were lodged and melted at the Bank of New Zealand, and after, the process weighed 180oz 13d\vt.' Only 15 tons of stone were crushed, and came from a rich surface leader above the old workings. Pretty Nelly, Hape Creek : The gold obtained from the late crushing of Pretty Nelly stone at the Hape Creek battery, was melted at the Bank of New South Wales to-day, and gave 31oz 3dwt 15gr of the reduced metal. Flying Cloud Company : The month's returns of this promising company amount to 221 oz of gold, of which 70oz ldwt came out of the. last lot of stone (55 tons) crushed at Souter's ' mill. A few more ounses will be added to this when the tailings from the blanketings are treated. The Nil Desperandum, Coromandel, have been crushing for the Flying Cloud, and the yield wa3 3oz to the ton. The machine is now crushing for the Erin's Hope. Some splendid stone has been taken from the Tokatea during the week, some of the specimens weighing over 201 b, and calculated to yieid a very large amount of gold. A specimen and general crushing will take place as soon as it can be got down the hills. The Independent claim, on the old Kapanga ground, has been yielding some of the best and richest stone I have seen for a long time. This will turn out a very valuable claim, as the stone is very rich, and easily procured. The Homeward-Bound, at the Tiki, have been getting good stove, quite equal, I am told, to the Pride of the Hills. Golden Crown Company : Very good stone of this mine is to hand again. Last night and this morning, a lot of first-class specimens were taken out of the lode on the main low level, and quite nine feet distant from where the gold was first struck there. There can be now no doubt about a permanent, or, rather, a main run of gold having been struck, and that too, it is pleasing to bear in mind, at over 90ft below beach level. This find at so low a level in the Golden Crown ground should enhance the value of those properties known as Tookey's and the Caledonian Companies. It is excellent news for them, and also for the Imperial Crown Company. The Una Company . : This company cleaned-up to-day after a fortnight's crushing, which has given 1750z of melted gold. Wild Missouri : A parcel of gold weighing I7oz, from this claim, was lodged in the Bank of New Zealand to-day. Another small parcel of 12oz was also deposited on account of Tookey's battery. Ballarat Star : The gold obtained from the seven tons of stone crushed at the Manakau machine was melted at the Bank of New Zealand to-day, and weighed soz lOdwt. Halcyon Machine : The crushing for the Young Australian Company, that is going on at this machine, is looking up for loz return. Cleaniug-up will take place to-morrow or the day after. Two tons of stone from the All-Right Claim gave a total return of 12dwfc, Inverness Company :' This mine is showing up magnificently, and promises to soon be second to no other in the field. Over 200oz of bard-squeezed amalgam were taken off the plates on Saturday, and the plates were again loaded this mornings when I visited the battery. • HASTINGS, TAPU CREEK. A recent crushing of four and a-half tons from the Little Jessie yielded over 24c >z of gold. An auriferous discovery of some importance has been made in the parish of Otau, a block of land situate between the Hunua and Ararimu, and forming a portion of both blocks. About the beginning of June, two men came in. from the district with a quantity of specimens, which we believe were taken to the Thames to be tested. These specimens were, we believe, obtained off a block of land purchased some time ago by Mr W. T. Buckland, and comprising some six hundred aci'es. On June 6, however, Mr J. S. Wilson, of Wairoa East, brought, in another rich specimen, which he had obtained from a reef on his own land. The specimen was not large, but it is very | auriferous, the gold being plainly visible . on the outside of the stone. j A gentleman, who arrived in Auckland on June 22, from Coromandel, informs us , that during the previous three days 490z of alluvial gold had been brought into Corcmandel from Kennedy's Bay. The numerous gold discoveries in various parts of the province have established the belief that a great portion of it is more or less auriferous. Gold has been found in the far north, at Mangawai, Waitakere, the Wade, Maraetai, the Thames, Coromandel, Ohinernuri, Mercury Bay, Rangiriri, Raglan, and other places ; and very recently we published some particulars of the discovery of gold on land belonging to Mr W. T. Buckland at Wairoa. On July 2 we received intelligence of the finding of an auriferous specimen iv the same district on the Wangahauhau farm, belonging to Mr John Wallace, of Mangere, and Mr W. J. Hurst.
