Gbey River Argus Office, Friday eveuing. The amount of revenue received at the Customs on goods passed for home consumption yesterday and to-day was £111 18s 4d. Melbourne. — The Argun of the sth reports :—■ la the import markets business has been exceedingly quiet throughout the day.. The
arrival of the mail steamer at Adelaide, with the probability o? its being a day or two yet before the Malta can reach Hobson's Bay in her disabled state, has had the effect of checking any desire to operate in the market which otherwise might have been evinced. The increase in shipments advised will chiefly be found iv season's soft goods. General merchandise, candles, . brandy, rum, &c, show a great falling off. ,We note a. fair inquiry for trade purposes for Victorian flour, at Lll 2s 6d to Lll 7s 6d. Wheat is very scarce, aud being much wanted, 4s 1 Id to 5s Id, according to quality, could readily be obtained for any parcels offering. The cargo of the Ceres, from Lyttelton, consisting of New Zealand wheat and oats, will be offered by public sale to-morrow forenoon. Oats are very firm, and prime samples command 3s 5d to 3s Gd. Maize is in' very scanty ( supply. No large lines aro offering, but there is a good demand for trade paicels at 4s 5d to 4s 6d. Kerosene oil, inconsequence of very favourable advices, is likely to. assume a firmer aspect, the quantity which can possibly come forward for the remainder of the winter being now pretty well ascertained. By a private telegram from Adelaide, we learn that the total shipments for the month to all the colonies amount to only 14,000 case 3, viz. — 1400 cases to Sydney, by a vessel not named ; 4200 cases by the. J. S. Stone, for the same port ; 3500 cases by the Thayer, from Boston, to Melbourne ; 5300 cases by the Compepitor, from New York, to this port also. At present, however, the market is without activity, and no sales have come under our notice during che day. In tobaccos, sales of Kerr's twist are mentioned at lOJd, but only to a modern extent. Sugars do not show much animation ; we understand, however, that the damaged-por-tion of the Annabella and Egcretia's cargo of Mauritius, amounting in all to 4700 bags and 600 pockets, will be sold by auction, -with all faults, to-morrow forenoon. In liquids, consideralle sales of Burkes bottled stout are reported at 2s. Martian's ale in bulk is being moved off mere freely at L 8 ss.
