The usual fortnightly meeting of the i/ouncil was held in the Town Hall jvenirig. .Present-J. Kilgour, Esq., Mayorin the chair ; Councillors Kennedy, Nichol, Strike, Moore, Purcell, and Wickes, and Parkinson. The minutes of last meeting were read irid confirmed. -«> ...-„■..., Only one tender was received for the £?"?»# Herbert street Tramway— from Mr Wilson, at 10s per week. It was rejolyed to accept it, subject to the con- ~ iitions as to maintenance of the line. A letter was read from Mr F. Guinness. asking information as to a site for a proposed gas-work, and how much gas the Council would be likely to consume annually in lighting the streets.^Ke-, ferred to the Public Works Committee.- * f fcfr^Tf f £ H l3s was received the Clerk to the Bench for fines inflicted during the month of June. a A nJ e S er iZPf, * eceived the Coal Creek Saw Mill Company, accepting the terms proposed by the Corporation as to the erection of a timber-wharf west of bimpson s coal wharf, and making application, fora chaia of the present wferf east of Simpson's.—The clerk was iastructed to inform the applicants that it is not intended to lease any portion of the wharf east of Simpson's for a timber depot. «! T S? fo g owin ff report was read from the Town Surveyor.—" I have the honor of laying before you the estimate of forming and metalling the following portions of street requested at last meeting— Taumi street, from Mackay s'treePto liaal Creek, forming centre and side paths and metalling 18 feet of centre, L 46; Mackay street, from : Albert to Boundary street, forming and metalling centre, 18 feet, and forming side paths, L 4 2; forming au4 metalling Albert street and forming side paths from centre of Church Reserve to Tidal Creek, 122; repairing one and a half chain of Gresaon street, east of Johnston street, L 9 ; forming side paths in Mackay street, from Alexander street to present works, Llßi total, L 137. The above includes more portions-of streets than was requested at last meeting, but on making a general examination of the town I find all those ■ portions I have given you above not only disgraceful to a prosperous town like this, but positively dangerous to both horse and r " man, caused in a great measure by the late incessant rain. I hope the Council will not class these works as a luxury which might be executed at some future time when the funds are more plentiful, and make some provision" for having them carried dut." ..• . , :■ The report was agreed td, on condition that the residents in each of the localities advanced the cashj and accepted, the Council's bills, for the same at a short • date. ' : A report was read from a committee appointed to enquire into an old claim of Stephen Roff, and reported that his claim, if any existed, Was against the Grey Road Board. -......,_ The following report was read from lie Finance Committee :— i.l. ."Your Committee have the .honor to report that they met on Tuesday, June 28th, at the Town Clerk's Office, and recommended that the consideration' of Mr Hall's letter, requesting compensation for trouble taken in collecting arrears oftonnage duea, be deferred until the balance of the same is sued for. Also, that the Town Clerk has received; payment during the month amounting to the sum of L 619 5s 3d, and paid thelame to the credit of; the into the Bank of New Zealand ; and that accounts have been paid amounting to the sum of L 525 3s 6d during tl^e month. And further^ that the liabilities of the Council, at this date, amount to the sum of LI9BO 4s. To sundry creditors, 1 LIJS&B 6s lid ; to Bank overdraft, L32ll7sld— LI9BO 4s, exclusive of the wharf contract and works in progress." Received and adopted. After a discussion, it was resolved that no more shingle be allp wed to be carted from the South Spit, and that a printed notice tp : that effect be placed there. The Council then adjourned. ' ' ;
