(from our own correspondent.) Nelson, June 24. The Provincial Council was prorogued yesterday, after a slight scene. On the night previous a public meeting was held, consisting of the anti-Luckie party, the old Government party, and Mr O'Conor. The Executive Act was, of course, condemned, and the Executive as self-seekers. Much mock sympathy was shown for Mr Kynnersley and Mr Harris by Gibbs, Wilkie, and others, who 'had previously made ungrounded attacks on both. Mr O'Conor discovered his West Coast colleagues to have deep, dark, and dreadful designs. In the Council yesterday, resolutions, passed at the meeting held here, were introduced by the Speaker, as a letter from the Chairman of the meeting. Messrs Donne, Reid, Shephard, and Kelling denounced the reading of the letter as an imprudent attempt at intimidating and coercing the Council by a handful of Nelsottites. All but six members walked out of the Chamber. An attempt to repeal the Executive Act failed. Mr Kynnersley is likely to be of more service to the Coast m the Assembly than m the Nelson Government service. It is not expected that Mr Harris will be disadvantaged by the change. Wellington, June 24. Mr H. R. Kane, formerly a draper liere, Was found dead m his bed this I morning. He was quite well last night. Your Committee have lost no time m prernring a Memorial foi presentation to the General Assembly, signatures to which are jeing now actively canvassed all over the listnct. ' ! On the Nelson side two canvassers are at present at work, m addition to which about 50 storekeepers m that district have accepted Memorials for the purpose of obtaining signatures thereto. Many of these storekeepers are personally known to members oi four Committee as being decidedly m favor of promoting the objects of the League. This assistance your Committee consider will be of very great value to them, inasmuch as it forwards the Memorial into places where it would be impracticable to reach by paid canvassers, except at great expense. The progress m this part of the district has been much retarded by the very bad weather we have had, but from intelligence received by the Committee a great nnmbei of signatures have already been obtained. While the attention of your Committee was m the first place devoted to obtaining the co-operation of the inhabitants on th< Nelson side of the Grey, the district on thit side has not been negleceed. The Greenstone was communicated witi at once, and the gentlemen employed to gel signatures there, notwithstanding 1 the weather and limited time at his command, found, no difficulty m obtaining nearly 20( signatures. He reports that the storekeeper! and diggers i m that district were almosl unanimous m favor of the annexation of thii district to Nelson. . : Your Committee have every confidence ir stating that the most: numerous and influential Memorial that has ever left the Wesi Coast will, m the course of another week oi ten days, be ready for transmission to Wei' lington. .'■'.'; • ' Your Committee have likewise to report that communication has been kept up Witl the Provincial Council at Nelson ; ev«sry-in< formation required has been afforded that Government as to the revenue and departmental expenditure of the district proposed to be annexed. Your- Committee nave endeavored m every way to forward this movement. Correspondence With Wellington, as well as Nelson, has been carried on with all who may have.it m their power to forward the objects of this Association m the General Assembly.
