LITTLE GREY.

'Thevallege'd discovery^ of a.hew gaartz reef is attracting the attention of the miners in the vicinity of the Saddle. The reef ; is situated oiyoneiof the; left-hand branches of - Murray prfeek, about four miles from its junction . with the Inangahua River. Creek^ comos ?into the "right-hand branch of Tthe Iriangahua, abotit ten miles above " the spot on Fern Flat where the township of Kynnersley once stood. Five parties have applied to] the Warden's clerk at the Ahaura for conditional protection for their claims, and, one of them applied' for the registration' of a water right, for the purpose of procuring water to drive a water-wheel. This application has been objected to, and the hearing of the case, will come on nfc the next Warden's Court. It is difficult to get any reliable information from a certain class of miners about any discovery ' of this sort. They affect so much mystery, and they have so many ■ friends to "lay on" that very often they lay themselves off. It often happens that the over-cautiousness of these people draws the attention of strangers towards them, when otherwise they would not be noticed, and while they are " colloquien " with an intimate friend, and whispering the secret of the whereabouts of the new discovery into his ear, some sharp customer who is • standing by and has his ears cocked, hears the whole conversation, and is off to look for a bit of space ; and very often the " mystery man " finds his claim measured off, or perhaps jumped, when he comes back to it. ' If a newspaper correpondent, or any other person seeking for reliable information, asks one of these ' men a civil question, he gets an uncivil answer, or in nine cases out of ten he is told a. deliberate falsehood, with the intention of purposely misleading him, and through him the hundreds who look to the press for trustworthy intelligence on matters of this sort. I have been led to make these remarks by an attempt which has been made to mislead me by a claimholder on this new reef, or whatever it is, the full particulars of which I will give you in my next letter.
