UNLICENSED HOUSES
[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir— l think it high time that some representation should;, be made of the very gross injustice which the holders of hotel licenses are subjected to, both in this and the adjoining township of Maori Creek. The cause of complaint consists in this — that the holders of licenses are compelled to submit to police surveillance, and that in i|» strictest sense, while there are houses without any license who seem to be able to do very much as they please, and with perfect impunity ; selling openly; and defiantly keeping their houses open during their own pleasure! - This state of things has been represented to the police on more than- one ".occasion, but no steps have as yet been taken to suppress them. I need hardly remark that the houses complained of come under the appellation of " questionable character. 1 ' I cannot but remark, in conclusion, that from my own experience in mining communities, hotelkeepers pay their licenses for nonholders to reap the benefit from them. — lam, Ac, A Sufferer.
