Thes.s. Kennedy, Captain Whitwell, left on Thursday evening for Westport and Nelsou. The ketch Jane Ann, Captain Smith, from Dunedin, was towed to the wharf by the p. 8. Dispatch on Thursday morning, after a long and very stormy passage. She left Dunedin on the 12th May, and Port Chalmers on the 18th. On tho 22nd ult., when off Cape Campbell, bad weather commenced, and lasted for about a fortnight, compelling her to seek shelter in Queen Charlotte's Sound, the Croixelles, Tonga, and under the Spit. She encountered the same succession of bad weather reported in our las c by Captain Ruxton. of the schooner Canterbury. She arrived in this roadstead on Thursday morning, and was brought in as above. The s.s. Waipara, Captain Bascand, ran iip from Ilokitika on Thursday morning with the Tararua's transhipped cargo. She took in a cargo of coal, and on Friday morning left on one of her usual southern trips to Okarito, Martin's Bay, &c. Cape Farewell lighthouse will be regularly lighted on and after the 17th iust. At a height of fifteen feet above the sea, it will be visible at a distance of seventeen nautical miles. The ketch Jane Elkin, from Hokitika, with a cargo of timber and hides, arrived at Port Chalmers on the 27th ult.- She left Hokitika on the 4th, and experienced adverse weather on the passage. The agents of the New Zealand Insurance Company received a telegram from London, viaGalle, announcing the safe arrival of the shin Cambodia, from Auckland, 155 days out, and. regarding whose safety fears were entertained. A telegram from Newcastle, published in the Sydney Herald, states — A life-buoy was picked up on the North Beach the other day; it is painted white, and on the rim is the word "Stormbird," with " Dunedin" under. The Stormbird, coal laden, left Newcastle on the 25th ult., and, as she is not reported, fears are entertained for her safety. Of the six new iron clippers constructed on the Clyde for the Glasgow Shipping Company, and named after Scottish lochs, the fifth, the Loch Lomond, anchored in the bay on the 28th ult., and in all respects, symmetry of appearance, excellence of material, and elaborate finish, she will take equal rank with her precursors sailing under the same flag. In the, case of the Loch Lomond similar skill and care have been exercised as in the construction of her sister ships, and; her builders have turned out as fine a model of
iron naval architecture as could be desired. —Argus. We understand that Mr Hood, who a short' time back was engaged in the cattle trade between this port and the Chatham Islands with the schooner Rifleman, has succeeded in chartering the fine schooner Ocean Wave for the purpose of again entering on the sjuto trade. The schooner left Onehnnga on Thursday for Lyttelton, where she will load graiii for Wellington, from whioh port Mr Hood will proceed with the Ocean Wave to the Chathatns, and there load with cattle for this port.— Southern Cross, May 28. A private letter received by the last English mail, states that the first of a new line of steamers, intended for the- London and Melbourne passenger trade, is being constructed by Napier, of Glasgow. She is to be called the Queen of the Thames ; her burden will be equal to 2600 tons, and her engines will be of 400-borse power nominal. She is expected to be one of the fastest steamers afloat ; and Captain M 'Donald, who is to command her, and under whose superintendence she is being constructed, is confident that she will be able to make tho voyage between London and Melbourne iti less than 50 days. She is to sail for this port in September —Argus, May 23.
