IMPORTS.

Per Wallabi : From Westport— 4o pigs, 38 bags potatoes, 9 do turnips, D. Maclean and C 6; 2 kegs honey, order ; 8 bags bacon, 6 kegs batter, Nancarrow, Henderson and Co. The 8.8. Tararua, which we previously announced as having arrived off Hokitika on Sunday last, was not tendered at that port till late on Tuesday afternoon. At tidetime on the afternoon the p s. Dispatch ran ont of this port to look for her, but she was nowhere visible. However, during the night, she came on, and passed the port, without wilting for the large number of passengers who had booked to proceed to «e«r Zealand parts by her. After the very long detention at Hokitika, the merchants litre are naturally indignant at the treatment this port has received on. the present occasion ; and a letter explaining the facts has been numerously signed and sent to Messrs M'Meckan, Blackwood and Co., Melbourne, by the s.s. Rangitoto yesterday. It is to the following effect : — • * Gentlemen— Since writing this morning in reply to yours of the 19th, it has been ascertained that the Tararua passed this port during the night. We beg to submit the following facts for yonr consideration. — Ist, The Tararua arrived at Hokitika on Sunday at 10 a. m. Owing to the bad state of the bar, she could not be tendered there till Tuesday (yesterday) afternoon. 2nd, The Grey bar has been worked every day daring the detention of the Tararaa off Hokitika. Had your Hokitika agent telegraphed here yesterday afternoon, "Tararaa just tendered here. Send out tug to w*it for her," the Dispatch would havejieen sent pat to wait; and. on the Tararua coming up to the roadstead, -wdald have been tendered without delay. There is no doubt the Tararaa left Hokitika yesterday evening with the full intention' of going past this port, which she did during the night. A good many passengers (14 or 15) were booked here for other ports, who have thus been disappointed, and our mails delayed another week at least. This might have been avoided by a simple telegram from Hokitika, without necessitating the least delay in the dispatch, of the Tararaa. As the foregoing not only affects your interests .but our own, we trust you will excuse our troubling you. on this subject. " The s.s. Kennedy arrived here last evening at 6.30. She left Nelson on Thursday, 2nd inst, at 1 pita., with a strong south-west breeze, which, increasing as she neared tbe Sandspit to a heavy gale, obliged her to run for shelter to Mutton Bay ; left there at 6 a>m. on Friday, and arrived in Westport at 11 o'clock same day; was detained there until Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock, when •he sailed for Hokitika, arrived outside that bar at 2.30 p m. same day, and having signalled to enquire if the bar was fit to take, and getting an answer in the affirmative, crossed at 3 p.m. ; discharged 15 tons cargo, and sailed for Greymouth at 4.15 p.m. on Wednesday, arriving as above. She will leave for Westport and Nelson this daj, at 5 p.ni. The s.s. Boulder Bank at 12 p.m. same day, but ' iTi ■nrnnitt riffhr heavy sea, the pilot was ■^-tniible to "attend 4o her-until the following dj»v. Arrived alongside Nelson wharf at U.*4o a.m. on the sth ; left Nelson at 2.30 and experienced light winds and fine '-treafhei; -arriving off Greymouth at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Yesterday when the tide served, the p. a. Dispatch ran out, and pat on board . the Rangitoto 20 passengers, and 2000oz of gold for Melbourne, shipped by the Bank of , Australasia and Bank of New South Wales, rand brought ashore nine passengers for this port. The steamer then proceeded on to Melbourne direct The as. Wallabi, from Westport and Wanganui, arrived hero .early on Tuesday afternoon. Captain Daniels reports leaving Wanganni on Friday last with a strongN.E. wind, which he carried till off Rocks Point, under the lee of which he ran his vessel, and proceeded to Westport, which he reached on tiunday; ' After" discharging cattle there ho recrowed the bar bound here, bat aiming, too late on the morniug's tide was compelled to wait till the afternoon, when she entered the. river safely. The Wallabi brought the . usual compliment of stock, consigned to her agents, Messrs D. Maclean and Co. She left again yesterday afternoon, for Westport and Wanganai. The schooner Canterbury, Captain Ruxton, from Lyttelton, was brought to the wharf yesterday afternoon by the p. a. Dispatch. She left Lyttelton on the 16th May, *nd encountered southerly winds and a very heavy westerly sea ; carried away foretopmiist. -Mri' tome sails/ and pat in to the. Croixellel to repair damages. There she «x-

--perienced a S.E. hurricane, and was compelled to remain off and on there for fourteen days. A ketch supposed t© be the Jane Ann, from Dunedin, was also there. On Friday last, at 7 a.m. the wind came round from the eastward, and the Canterbury made good use of it, as next day, at 11 a.m., she was off the Grey bar. There was too much sea on to allow of her being brought in then, and she stood off to sea for several days. She returned to the roadstead on Tuesday evening, and was brought in as above. She brings a large cargo of produce, consigned to Messrs D. Maclean and Co.
