[By Electric Telegraph.] [from our own correspondent. ] [The following was issued from this office as an Extra on Tuesday evening :— ] Hokitika, Tuesday evening. The s.s. Tararua arrived from Melbourne at nine o'clock on Sunday morning, but owing to bad weather was not tendered till this afternoon. She made a five days seventeen hours' passage. She left Melbourne on the 30th, experienced very fine weather for the first part of the passage, and the latter part a very heavy nortlf-east gale, which obliged her to go slowly for eighteen hours, and had thick 'weather on making the land. She brings six saloon and 42 steerage passengers, and 232 tons cargo for all ports. She passed the Claud Hamilton off Cape Leiptrop at 11 p.m. on the 30th. The Tararua made her last upward passago with the English mail in 4 days 11 hours. Passenger List.— Mr A. C. Pritchard, Mrs Patterson, Master Pattel-son, Mr Ella, Mr Wallace, Captain Lindsay. 42 in the steerage. Melbourne, May aO. Business dull. Wool sale 3, chiefly greasy, large attendance., bidding spirited. The Assembly has passed nearly half the estimates. The Government refuse to grant a pension to Wintle's widow. Mr Longmore has given notice of motion that the Government vote L2OOO to" Dr Lang. Mr Chomley has been appointed Crown Solicitor. A Publican's Bill has been read a second time. Charles Day, chemist, Lonsdale street East, committed suicide, on Friday last, with prussic acid. Deceased was suffering from delirium tremens. His funeral, on Sunday, was largely attended. A serious railway collision took place at Footscrayon Tuesday last. ABallarat train dashed into a Williamstown train. About forty passengers were injured— none seriously. " Walshe's inquest was concluded on Wednesday. Supple was fully committed for trial. Draper has been found guilty of a charge of making a false entry in the Bank books. Sentence was deferred till law points were argued. A man named Thornton or Thompson, styling himself a clergyman from New Zealand, was charged with obtaining money on false .tpretences. He states he has authority to collect subscriptions to build a church burned by Maoris. The Russian war-ship Dazarin has anchored at Hobart Town. The officers were invited to a ball. The Governor was present. Public opinion against assisted immigration is steadily gaining ground. Mr Charles Matthews's performances, continue to draw good houses. The Queen's Birthday festivities passed off quietly. The Governor did not give a ball. Captain ForsterFyans, an old colonist at Geelong, is dead. . Carlton Gardens' gates were removed during the night. The roadway, was forcibly opened. The Government decline interference. A meeting of shareholders of the Polynesia Company was ; stormy. Mr Keith charged the directors with defrauding the shareholders, in selling the company's land. The chairman made a full and satisfactory explanation, and the directors were re-elected. ■ The match between Harris and Hewitt, 300 yards, is fixed for the 23rd June. Sydney, May 30. Cowper, junior, has been appointed Water Police Magistrate at Penrith. Henry llogerson has been arrested on a charge of bigamy, and committed for trial. The Governor is visiting Bathurst and the Orange districts. Maitland was again flooded last Wednesday. South Sea cotton is teupence per pound. ♦ Business generally dull. Thunderbolt committed a robbery near Armidale. The police pursued, and a constable named Walker chased ThunderWit for seven miles. Thunderbolt got bogged, and refused to surrender. Shots were exchanged, and Walker shot Thunderbolt dead. Government has given Walker four hundred pounds, also promotion. The Fasso, from Mauritius via Nelson, haa arrived. Sugars, at auction — Rations, L3l ; finest whites, L 42 53. Negotiations are pending with a view to reduce the telegraph charges. Thie Spanish Consul sailed in the ship Hawkesbury. Proceedings have been instituted against Dr Smith for opening an anatomical museum. . A Gold Fields Commission has been appointed. Wool Sales. — Prices unchanged. Sheepskins in demand. Mr Dalley, barrister, has been appointed a meniber of the Legislative Council, vice Dr Macfarlane resigned. The Wonga Wonga sailed on Saturday lor. Honolulu via Auckland, with fifty passengers. The value of her freight is L2OOO. Tbpley has commenced a walking match against time. He walked seven miles in 57 minutes.
