THE FIRE BRIGADE.

[to the editor.] Sir,— ln your report of the proceedings ' of the meeting convened by the captain and members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, I read with pleasure that a resolution was adopted, to the effect of levying a general special rate for the supply of stand-pipes and other requisites for the efficient working of the Brigade. _ It is. an indisputable fact that a fire brigade, for the preservation of life and property, is an absolute necessity in any community ; and it is not just and fair that a few only should give their time, labor, or money to supply that want. In a comparatively small community like Greymouth there is scarcely one who is not depending on, or either directly or indirectly, in the welfare, prosperity, and preservation of the town. It is, therefore, the duty of every one to give his mite and aid to secure that object. If a portion of the town is destroyed by fire, it must, of necessity, affect every one ; and that which is the misfortune of A to-day may be the fate of Z to-morrow. If the Municipal Council has the power (which it should have) to levy a rate, as proposed, then by all means let it be done, and no person possessed of common sense will or can object to it, as only those who have a more direct interest at stake will be called upon to pay for the support of that which is the only effectual means to prevent the spreading of fires, namely— an efficient Fire Brigade. Yours. &c., , A Resident. Greymouth, May 7, 1870.
