Christchurch.— The Times of the 9th inst. says :— A heavy export business is being done to Melbourne, Sydney, and the northern provinces of New Zealand. Wheat is in fair request at 3s for good samples, but higher rates continue to be given for individual lines for prompt delivery. The demand for oats has considerably improved ; several new purchasers are now in the field, and quotations, in consequence, haye 1 advanced ; fair feed oats cannot be bought under 2s to 2s 2d, while superior samples have touched 2s 24d to 2s 3d. Farmers recently have shown less inclination to sell, and a few of the larger growers are inclined to store, and consequently will be -in readiness to ship to the best market on very short notice. No imErovement can be noted in the demand for arley, which at the present moment is extremely neglected, as no outside demand exists. The brewers continue to operate sparingly ; the merchants also are not buying largely ; 3s 6d may be quoted as fair market value for cash. Higher rates, however, are given for terms. A steady demand may be noted in provisions. Orders have been more freely received from the West Coast, and our Btocks of butter are getting somewhat reduced. Sales have transpired at Bd, but the lot was of very superior quality, and current rates may be quoted at 7|d to Bd. No improvement in values have taken place in cheese, and prices remain at G£d to 7d. Hams and bacon are in active request, but the low stocks at present on hand check trade, and well-cured parcels are readily placed at B£d to 94d.
