TASMANIA.
Despite the failures hitherto in discovering a payable gold field, the Tasmanians are still hopeful of success. The Lawiceston Examiner of the 29th ult. thus writes : — " The gold news continues daily to become more and more encouraging, and even the most sceptical in the community are beginning to think that there is something in it after all. A considerable quantity of gold is finding its way into town from Piper's River, The Springs, and the Blackboy, and as soon as the present rather crude appliances are replaced by proper machinery we may safely consider that the average yield will be very much increased. Waterhouse begins to look up again : yesterday a telegram was received from Melbourne, to the effect that the trial crushing of the Central Pioneer, Hope, and Railway Company had resulted in a yield of loz. lOdwt. 6gr. to the ton. Mining men are on the qni vive for the starting of the United Victorian and Tasmanian Goldmining Company's machinery, and splendid results are anticipated. Before another month has passed over our heads we trust that all doubt as to the existence of rich gold fields in the colony will have been satisfactorily set at rest."
