Sydney, April 2. From New York we. learn that the first steamer for the Darien Canal expedition has sailed, and the rest of the fleet were to follow soon. Subscriptions towards the Stanton Retiring Fund amount to 100,000dols. A lumber-yard and pier beionging|to Messrs Conkin and Co. has been totally destroyed by tire. The strike on the telegraph lines has been amicably arranged. Washington news is to the effect that an adjournment of Congress is expected about Ist of May. Women clerks attend the Women's Suffrage Convention. The Reconstruction Committee have agreed to their report on the Virginia ' Bill passed by the Senate, and have recommended its adoption by the House immediately. Mr Norton's Bill provides fora national currency ; the equalisation of circulation was taken up and afterwards adjourned. At Indianopolis a great fire has occurred; the damage done amounted to 300,000d01s — amongst other places the Opera Hall was destroyed. At Boston, a man named Collins, clerk in the City Treasury, has proved a defaulter to the extent of 160,'OOOdols. San Francisco. Rains have fallen very generally. There is every prospect that the next season's harvest will be the finest ever yet garnered. — Quotations : Flour, superfine, 4dol 35c, to 4dol 75c ; for wheat, Idol 35cj to Idol ! 75c. — Freight, low, and a large amount of tonnage disengaged. Price 3to Liverpool I -were LI 1 7s 6d per ton. Information has been received that E. M. Stanton, Lite Minister of War, is dead. One of the national banks, with only 2,000, 00Qd0l capital, has issued cheques for 40,000,000d0l in one day during the gold battle. . Vessels loading for the Colonies were the Gallilee, the Sparkling Dew, and another, name unknown.
