BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual weekly, meeting of tlie Borough, Council was held in the. Town Hall on- Friday. . Present : J. Kilgour, Esq., ; Mayor, in the chair, Councillors Wickes, Nichpl, Strike, Moore, Coatea, and Parkinson. The niiriutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. " ; On application, a license was grantedto Orr and Co. to sell kerosene, under the usnaLconditions^ .'. . . ; A-.; letter was ' read ; from Mr H. . H. Lahman ? stating .that he had repeatjecUy itef used io pay the> assessment on his propertied for 1869, because it was an increase ' on J the previons ■ year. He ihad ; absent, attending the sittings of the County Council when the assessment, was struck, and. ■ , was ii* ignorance bf > the amount charged. Mr F. Cook ■wrote cnTtipliiiuing that a mistake had apparently been made in the valuation of. his property in Richmond Quay. In 1868 it was valued at L3O, in 1869 at L 65, and in 1870, L 39. He asked : that it be reduced to the amount charged this year. < / Mr Strike nioved, and Mr NicirpL. seconded, that the rate be confirmed. ' Mr Moore thought that there waa clearly an error, and thuy ought to give attention, to, the (.request,. He moved an. amenclraerit— " That the Town wait? upon the late Valuator, ascertain how the great increase took place, and report to the Council." .-. ...-■ _. . .. .- Mr Coates and .the Mayor supported motion, which was carried. ■ ; -•- An account was received from. Mr W. r Dale for newspapers and stcitioriery, ahd" also a claim for L3O for making a valuation of the town properties in 1869. Tlie stationery accoiint was referred to the Finarc j Committee,, and with regard to the valuation, it was. stated that there were two valuations made in one year, and Mr Dale was appointed by. the. year, and not by the valuation. It was moved by Mr StrikKj ■ and seconded by. Mr Nichol, that Mr Dale be informed that the Council will riot pay tlie claim. — Carried. .. ..." Messrs K l^our and Perotti applied for ' permission to continne the present line of tramway along His;h street in a straight line, so as to .enable them to carry it down the Vjvch on the first terrace. — Granted, subject to present regulations.'*' Mr James Taylor wrdte, asking that the valuation on the White Horse Hotel, ; LIBO, be reduced to Llso.— The resohi-: tion was confirmed. : " .-••■:• Mr Sewcll wrote, asking permission to fill in a blind creek in Mount street, and to take the stuff from the road line behind the brick shed. — Granted subject to the approval of the Town Surveyor. : The Town Surveyor reported that the watpr could be removed from Albert, street, and the road made comfortable. for LlO. ■■:■■'■■ • ■ ■ ■ . ■; ....... .v.v.Mr Nichol moved, "That in the pre sent financial state of the Council the proposed expenditure cannot be entertained, as there were many other portions of the town from which similar applications would be' received." •-;•;: Mr Cvates seconded the motion, which was carried. . ; Mr Nichol moved "that ;the.,sittings . ..of the Council be' held in future on the 2nd and 4th Fridays in '-each month.'*; This was agreed to. : ., ■; . ...,;. ;' On the application of Mr ; Mooßß;in.r ; structions were given to the Town Surveyor to supply any material he may have on hand for the purpose of constructing a . landing stage for the 'fire enghmin front" of Richmond Quay.
