TERRIBLE TRAGEDY IN NEW YORK.
The following was telegraphed to San Francisco : — New York, Jan. 3. A terrible tragedy, .recalling in some of its; features the famous Helen iJewett murder, but invested, in addition, with, shadows of dark mystery, occurred at 69 Elizabeth streetj last evening, at a house of assignation, kept by Mrs Beck. Among the visitors to the occupants of the back room, every SabbatTi afternoon for the past five months, have been an unknown gentleman and a closely- veiled lady. ' Nothing was known of the parties by Mrs Beck, except that the man engaged the room every, previous Saturday ; and that the mysterious woman, whose face she had never seen, met him at the usual time. Last evening, at 6. 30, .pi5t0l shots.were heard in the chamber. Mrs Beck and a policeman hastily broke in the door, and found the man lying on the floor insen-i sible, with a pistol shot through the right temple. His companion, a handsome and apparently refined and intelligent ladyi was lying near him with a ghastly wound in the left temple. The lovers were taken to the Bellview Hospital, where they died shortly afterwards, without speaking a word to clear up the mystery. From papers found in their; pockets, it is believed that; the name of the man was George Batman, and the woman Annie M'Namara. Both were school-teachers in Brooklyn. The bodies were placed in the Morgue for identification. Great excitement prevailed last night in the vicinity of the tragedy. - :.. January 4. j The terrible- love fragedy In.
