Melbourne.— The Argiis of the 7th inst. reports :— Business in the import markets has not been active to-^ay* aad very litt^i in the \yay of sales has been brought imdeij our notice. In breadstuff's we note trade sales of flour at.Lll to LI 1 5s for good Victorian brands. Sales of prime samples of wheat are effected at ss. Id. Supplies, however, are extremely backward, and very short of requirements, a ciroumstance which not only cliecks sales, but for the moment causes a good deal of inconvenience. Feeding grains are unaltered in value, and the demand is limited to supplying mere trade requirements. Maigo is disposed of at 3s 6d. Oats •ire in slow sale at from 3s to 3s 4d, according to quality. Kerosene oil commands notice;, we hear of the sale of 1000 cases, a ; mixed parcel, at a very full figure. Quo,tationa range up to 2s 24d to 2s 3d for good brands. N/'twithslanding the decline -reported in candles early in the week, little indication of a disposition to operate in. the market has teen evinced on the one hand; while on the oijhers holders generally- are not anxious to press sales at the reduced rates i\o\y ottering of ;o£d, for best brands. We understand that Messrs J. King and Co,, grocers, Ballarat, have called a meeting of their creditors for Tuesday next. We learn that the acceptances of Messrs 15. Bo.\vma.u :uid Co. have been Returned unpaid, A good deal of excitement still continues to prevail in commercial circles, in consequence of tho failures recently reported, but while admitting .this to be only nntuiaj, and not nioxe than mi^ht hav.e bccnc^cctcd
under the circumstances, we would deprecate the indulgence in a habit so very common, but in every way so objectionable, as that of, without any grounds whatever, qrigiuating ami circulating rumours detrimental to the positiqu and standing of the various mercantile firms in t\\e city. At the present time, especially, the bandyjpg about the nam^s, and wantonly injuring the fair fame, of <wr merchants aud traders, is not merely foolish, bub may in the end precipitate a crisis which, notwithstanding the aspect of gloom banging over us, might, by the exercise of n. little prudence and carp, be averted. In this respect, it is hoped that an appeal to tlie common sense of the community may not be iv vain.
