THE MAGNET.
(To the Editor of the Grey River Arffus.\ Sib,— In your issue of this day's date the following statement appears :— " That in consequence of the brig Magnet drawing 2 feet more water than the Kate Conley the latter was towed in first, the Captaiu of the Dispatch not deeming it prudent to tow in the former." . , l That the Magnet draws 2 feet more water than the Kate Conley may be true for all I know, but I must inform you the reason the Magnet was left outside was that, Captain Deare, through some reason best known to himself, reported no water on the bar at half -past 4 p.m., when he should have been towing in the Kate Cnnley, there being then 9 ftet of water en the bar, and when we went out at 5 pin. there was 10 feet on the I ar, the title having half hour to flow. I 1 •was then at-ked if 1 would risk the brig. I paid ''yes," for I thought there was plenty of time ar.d water to do it, which afterwards proved to be the cite, fcr we found Jl feet on the bar coming iv. Now, s^r, what I object to is the fact pf j-nur circulating a report that my vessel was (letained outside for want of water, which is \mtrue. You must be aware such a statement would injure a vessel. I think, therefore, in asking you to correct this report I hope it is only vhat 1 am entitled to. I have never at ked ycur rcpoi ter to say any--thing concerning my veEsels except what' 1 liay lor ; nor do I remember ever any report icir.g made in their fsivoiv \ hope, thercr
lore, you will refrain from publishing incorrect iep*>rts of a prejudicial nature, as in ;he pres.diit case. . I am, &c. , M. Kennedy. Grey, Feb. 26, 1870. [Mr Keuuedy evidently dqss not comprehend the relationship which a respectable ne a spapcr bears to the public. He seems to imagine that the facts it records receive their complexion according to the number of which may hang to a particular .eport. -This is an eminently shopkeeper's philt S'ipby, and we are djsjwseil on this account to make allowance fqr Mr Keunedy's i'uiendo against ourselves, as he probably is anable to lift his iniiy.l boyqnd the mere consideration of £ s d. At the same time we wish him tq understand that we shall net allow him to impugn the veracity or impartiality of the Grky Rivbr Argus with iuipvj dty, es,; ecially w hen he does so qn the trumpery grounds, contained in his letter. He deliberately accuses, us of publishing a stateme; $ made fqr the purpose of injuring ihe reputation of hjs visscl, an 4 bases the accjfabion upon nqbhing more tliau his own opiuion. He inipiytes motives aud assumes fa. tj v. ith regard to the action of the captain of the Disuatch which have no foundation excopt in the paltry spleen which hag been excited in his raiud. He would probably have adopted another t»n§ had the Magnet bnen deposited on the Ppit in cousequetiee of a waub of that proper caution which the captain of the tug displayed. It may be a sore point with i\]r Kennedy that a vesstV better adapted, for the trade of this port than In 3 own his made its appearance here, but he may rely that we shall not smother that fact, even if he were tq offor us his grand solatium for all things.— rnone}'— tq do so, For his further information we ina,y inform him that we shall not refrain from publishing fucix, however "prejudicial" they may be to any particular person. The Grey River Akgus is the representative of the public, and not of, Martin Kennedy.— =Er».]
