THE NEW LAGOON LEAD.
(FKOJI OVR QWX CORRESPONDENT. J February 9. • It is now upwards of four months since, the second rush too c place to the ground '" situated between the Qld Lagoon Lead and the Saltwater. It will be remembered that a jrnsh occurred to the same ground about a month previously, but was abandoned by all excepting one party, who persevered in their endeavor, and tilti-. mately found payable wash. It was then that an extensive rush took place, and the whole length of the ground was taken up; A considerable number of shafts were put down at the southerly end, and as it was thought that the lead might possibly be narrow, and missed by merely sinkingshafts, a tunnel was taken in from the brow of the terrace till the high reef waa met without any result. It was, then that the men became satisfied that nothing was likely to. be found in that direction, and they at once abandoned that portion of the ground. , Those that had taken up claims towards the Saltwater were more fortunate, for, after some little trouble in sinking shafts, they succeeded in getting such prospects as to warrant them, to put in tunnels, some from the creek itself, and some from the brow of the terrace towards the Lagoon. This was the most satisfac-. Tory way to prove the ground, and so far as it has gone the result is highly pleasing. Several of the claims have the character "" of bein^ very good, and likely to remune-:; rate the men handsomely for their labors. The others will do so in a more or less degree* but taken as a, whole, these claim s. will bear favorable comparison with-any ■U that have been opened in the Saltwater 1 * district for some time past. The men have, hajd some trouble to get their claims into working order— long tunnels to take in .j' water to bring on, and in some cases diffi-. cult fluming to erect across the Saltwater Creek. It would be premature to say that they are all prepared" to wash at the present. Some have already made a commencement, and the rest will not be long in following suit. In speaking.of fluming,, a very difficult piece of work has just been completed by Blake and Co., about half-a-niile higher up the creek, where it i- is both, very wide and deep ; some of the j supports cannot be less then 50ft in length. This workmanship, reflects, the highest credit on all engaged, and there is no j doubt that they will soon reap a substan- , tial reward for their labor. Blake and Co. have been working for some past on the south bank of the creek,, and now this i fluming is erected, it will enable them to ! command ground^ on the. opposite side,' :The different works and buildings which ere now to be seen on the side of the tramway tends greatly to break the mono-, tony that used to. prevail formerly, and a great clearing in the dense bath will be made before the whole of the precious metal is collected in the neighborhood and deposited in the various banks.
