Foretop jumped away with the lead, but in about 50 yards Kaspar headed him, was never afterwards approached, and won , in a canter by four lengths, Atla3 finishing about three lengths in the rear of Foretop. Economy jumped away with the lead, was never headed, and won in a common canter by a length, Atalanta beating Arundel by several lengths for second place. Time for this race not taken. Canterbury Cup, of 300 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 20 soys each, 5 ft. Second horse to save his stakes. Distance, 3 miles. Mr Studholme's eh h Knottingley, by Scud — Termagant, 6 yrs, lOdt lib (Carter) 1 Mr W. D. Barnard's b g Flying Jib, by Leotard— Wetsail, 5 yrs, "9st Blbs, ■-. ... (Reay) 2 Mr R. M. Morten's eh c Southern Chief, by Maltou— Spray, 4 yrs, 9st 31b (Monaghan) 3 Betting : 3 to 1 on Knottingley, 4 to 1 ftgst the Jib, and 8 to 1 agst Southern Chief. Knottingley led for the first mile, the other two being within a length of him. At the two-mile post they spurted up to him, and they passed the stand close together • gbinground the top turn Southern Chief took the lead, the pace considerably slackening, Knottingley and the Jib close up ; they kept this order with little variation till the bottom turn, when Knottingley assumed the command, and from this point it was clear to those who had glasses that he had the race, as Southern Chief showed unmistakable signs of beiug beaten, and soon after getting into the straight Reay was seen to be riding his horse, and Knottingley coming on at his leisure won in a canter by four lengths, the Jib obtaining second place by three lengths. Jones' b g Trump, aged, list 71bs (Cowan) 4 Mr Garforth's b g Native, aged, 1 1st 71bs (H. Prince) 0 Betting : G to 4 agst Don Pedro, 2. to 1 agst Native, 4 to 1 each agst Star of the South and C4fcturion, and 5 to 1 agst Trump. A good start, Trump leading aver the first hurdle, Native second, Star third, Centurion fourth, and the Don, who was rather fidgetty at- the jost, last ; going over the hurdle, Trump was still leading, but the Don had run into second place, Native here refusing, and never afterwards was in the race ; at the fourth hurdle the Star had run into the second place, Trump still showing the way, which ht) kept till over the sixth hurdle ; at the seventh he baulked, the Don here assuming the command, the Star still going well, but coming up to the last hurdle it was evident, bar an accident, that the Don must win, and clearing the last hurdle well, he came away and won easy, by" two lengths, the Star beating Centurion by double that distance. At the three-, quarter mile post Arundel ran otf the course, and allowecl^the leading horses to get several lengths ahead/- Mousetrap here joining them ; they ran in this ordur to the straight, where Arundel again' joined his horse 3, but boltintr oft' the course on to the j>longh-gallop w.as never afterwards in the race ; Malabar and Water witch from this point miming a fine race home, which the former won by a 'length' ; three lengths off came Maid of the Mist third, a similar distance separating her from Mousetrap.: ,Time, 2nnn 52sec. Knottingley sprang away with the lead, but before they reached the stand Foretop was leading, Knottingley and Magenta close up, tha Chief, who seemed to be outpaced from the commencement, being three lengths in the rear ; they travelled in this order round the top turn and along the far side of the course to the bottom turn, where Knottingly and Foretop were j running head and head two or three lengths before Magenta, the Chief being now hopelessly beaten ; they continued in this order to the half-mile post, where Knottingley had his field beaten, and galloping on won very easy by four lengths, Magenta, who canie at the finish, beating Foretop by a short half longth for second place. Time^ Smin 49sec. Criterion Stakes, of 50 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 5 soys each. Flying Jib led, closely uttenHed by Economy, Atalanta two or, three, lengths in the rear ; they ran thus at a good pace to the distance, where Reay and Jones began to- ride their horses, aud Atalanta coming with a rush passed them and won easy by three lengths, Economy beating the Jib by a length. Miss Flat made all the running, the others, with the exception of Bobby Burns, who was ; outpaced, being close up ; coming into the straight, they were all together, and a splendid race home ensued, Mr Delamain's two running a dead heat for first place, Lyndon only beaten a neck, and Peeress a length for fourth place ; Bobby Burns was beaten off, and Rydal, who was running well at the time, bolted off the course inside the distance. post.
