ANOTHER BANK FRAUD.
[age.] The E. S. and A. Chartered Bank of Sydney was, on the 33 st nit., robbed of the sum of L4OO. Some time back a small account was opened in the name of F. H. Lee with the Newtown branch of the Commercial Bank, and on the 29th December a man opened another account in the name of William Oliver at the E. S. and A. Chartered Bank, paying in what purported to be Ljee's cheque on the Newtown branch of the Commercial for L 563. Two days afterwards, on Friday, Oliver's cheque for L4OO was presented and paid before the fate of the cheque for L 563 had been ascertained. Two men are already in custody charged with conspiracy to defraud, and the whole oi the money, with the exception of L3O, has been recovered. Joseph Salisbury, of 66 Bathurst street, printer of a publication called the Police News, was arrested by Detective Elliott on Saturday morning, and a man named Greig, who had been employed by Salisbury or had had transactions with him, has since been arrested by a detective, with the assistance of the local police, at Goulburn, and brought down to Sydney. Greig had LlB6 in his possession when taken into custody. Salisbury appeared in custody before the police magistrate (Captain Scott) on Monday morning, and after the evidence of the apprehending constable had been taken, was remanded until Thursday, bail being refused. Detective Elliott deposed that he read the warrant to the prisoner, which charged him and others with having on or about the 30th Dec, at Sydney, "unlawfully, conspired, combined, confederated, and agreed together, and by divers false pretences and subtile devices, falsely and fraudulently obtained to themselves the sum of £400, the money of the bank, with intent to cheat and defraud." Elliot accused the prisoner with having identified himself with that charge by changing one of the .£SO notes (the proceeds of the ,£4OO cheque), and in other ways. Prisoner replied, "It is quite right ; 1 have identified myself in that way." By telegram from Sydney, it is announced that the two men have been again remanded until Tuesday, and a third party, suposed to be implicated, is being sought for by the police.
