Kilgour, Esq., (Mayor), in the chair ; Councillors Moore, Parkinson, Nichol, Strike, Wickes, Kennedy, and Purcell. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. On application, permission was granted to the Resident Magistrate to use the Town Hall for his court while the alterations were being effected to the Couithouse ; and a license to sell kerosine was granted to Mr Magoffin. A letter was read from Mr Lahmau, M.C.C., enclosing a copy of a telegram sent by him to the County Chairman, remonstrating against the shameful way in which the Council had been treated by Mr Hoos regarding the vote for the protective work ; and he asked that some steps should be taken by the public to show that the inhabitants will not quietly submit to the gross negligence displayed to their interests. The telegram was as follows: — "Great indignation here -on account of the balance of the grant to the Corporation not forthcoming. Contractors threaten to stop work, and take legal proceedings. As the LSOOO will be placed to our credit to-day, send remittance forthwith to prevent public meeting and serious consequences." — Lahman. The reply received was — " Vote lapsed ; L 1250 on estimates, will be paid as sdoii as passed. Act prohibits to issue cheques after half-year. Auditors, treasurer, and myself liable to LSOO each penalty in doing so.— C. Hoos." The Town Clerk also read a letter lie had sent to the County Chairman, stating that the balance of the. voto of LISOO was absolutely required immediately, in order to meet payments due on contracts entered into upon a promise received from him. that payment ofHhe vote might be expected before the end of the h'nancial half-year. ' Mr Wickes moved — "That his Worship be respectfully requested to call a public mooting in order to obtain an expression «>f opinion on the treatment Greymonth has received at the hands of the County Chairman in regard to the vote of LISJO passed last session, and not received." Mr Kennedy seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The remaining business was unimportant.
