THEATRICAL NOTES.

[EUROPEAN MAIL.] George Fawcett has appeared at the Olympic in Andrew Halliday's dramatised version of Charles Dickens's "David Copperfield." The title of the drama is " Little Em'ly." It is not the same piece that used to be played in the Colonies. It promises to have a long run. Playgoers are beginning to be alive to the sterling qualities of Australian artistes. John Winterbottom, another old colonial favorite, has charge of the orchestra at the Olympic, Barry Sullivan has withdrawn " Plain English," and produced . the ." Gamester," which is proving a great success. Tom Lenton's Australian pupils continue their prosperous career at the Amphitheatre. Clarence Holt and his daughter are playing at Astley's for a few nights. Madame Celeste is at the Surrey, which is under the management of Mrs Chas. Pitt. Lady Don has finished her Plymouth engagement. Sarah and Carry Nelson are in Scotland, and doing remarkably well in burlesque business. Alfred Nelson is on the regular staff of the Queen's. . Dominick Murray and his wife are making a successful professional tour in the United States. Wash, Norton, and Chas. Steele have returned here from the Cape, and are organising another company for Australia. Mr John Collins, the Irish comedian, is now fulfilling a long engagement at the National Theatre, Cincinnati. He made his first appearance on Oct. 4 to a large audience, and was well received. Professor Anderson and daughter are successfully performing at Aberdeen. Mr Jardine Cayne is starring the provinces. Mr Lyster has just returned from Italy, where he has been busy for the last six weeks engaging an opera company for Australia. He has been very successful, and has reason to congratulate himself on having been able to induce singers of such high standing as the following to take so long a voyage : — Prima donna, Signora Lucia Baratti ; contralto, Signora Lucia Chambers ; first tenor, Sig. Mariano Neri ; first baritone, Enrico Maricornia ; first bass, Enrico Dondi. The prima donna and her father, with the contralto and the bass, sailed in the Yorkshire for Melbourne on Nov. 1, from Plymouth ; and the tenor and baritone will accompany Mr Lyster in the mail which leaves Marseilles on Dec. 3. The name of Miss Chambers will be well known to the Australian public, and it, is some source of congratulation that a native of Tasmania should have taken the high honors she has in such cities as Milan, Berlin, and Lisbon. Under the name of Ghambesi, the Continental papers speak in warm terms of her vocal and dramatic powers. Amongst the operas to be performed by the company in Australia are " Maria di Rohan" (Donizetti), "Vespri Siciliani" (Verdi), " Saffo" (Pacini), " Don Carlos" (Verdi), and k 'Ebrea" (Halevy.)
